Spices and seasonings

Pre-op I was always a big spice and flavor guy. A1 on everything, hot sauce, love lemons and limes and let us not forget barbecue and all them amazing seasonings. Now that I am post-op and getting closer to starting a more normal diet I wanted to know how this stuff has affected anyone when eaten. Are theses things I am going to have to say goodbye too, have to wait and see if tolerated or just need to wait a wile and then try and incorporate them back into my life. Any advice and personal experiences greatly appreciated .

I use all the same spices I've always used. I'm not a big sauce person and would probably check sugar content before I used a store bought bbq sauce but that's all I can think of.

some of us can eat them, some not. My stomach is OK with spices, but really acidic things (like a lot of lemon or lime on things) don't sit well any more.

In Brazil, the recomendation is eat fresh foods and avoid industrialized condimentad sauces at posop.

I've always seasoned everything pretty generously and continue to do so post-op, because even though I can't eat much anymore, and the foods I am eating are generally much healthier, I still want them to taste good...and the nice thing is that most spices/seasonings are either calorie free or low-cal.

I have not had any issues with spices or seasonings but I do try to look for low sugar/low carb/lower calorie condiments and read the labels on everything just to make sure I am not adding unnecessary calories.

There are a few sugar free BBQ sauces on the market but I actually prefer my husband's homemade recipe which is made with splenda, so if you like to cook, it can be fun to play around with your own recipes at home. you can enter your recipe information into My Fitness pal or another app that will allow you to calculate the nutrition facts and macros to make sure you keep track of it more accurately.

I feel like eating bland food will give me diet fatigue which is just a recipe for failure later on, so making sure I still enjoy what food I do get to eat is setting me up for long term success.

I was think about. In EUA spices or seasonings are so very important. The brazilian recomendation sounds restrictive :-)

yes, definitely there is nothing wrong with adding seasonings, I think you just want to be careful with lots of processed foods, and do a lot of home cooking so you know what you are adding to your food...but flavor is still really important in my opinion.

I love spices and seasonings post-op, just as I did pre-op. The one thing you'll want to watch out for is the sugar content in processed condiments, but you can learn to make your own with healthier ingredients!

Rock the seasoning!!! See what still works. I'm good, but I do watch sugar. I was a big ketchup fan before, but tend to go low sugar version or use salsa. For BBQ sauce I tend to drizzle regular when out, but at home I generally use G. Hughes Sugar Free Hickory or Honey - heard about it on this forum. Very good and worth the money. My wife, who hates most of my seasoning stuff, even uses it. You'll likely toe in the water and venture forward over time, so have fun.

I am 8 weeks out now and can tolerate seasonings & sauces well. I only tried them one at a time over the course of a few days to make sure my stomach would tolerate it. For example, last week I tried mayo (on sliced deli turkey meat) and it's worked out good. I didn't do large amounts daily as I never was that crazy about mayo (it's flavorless to me lol) but I was happy it sat well. Yesterday I tried buttermilk ranch for the first time (on chicken wings) and that worked out too. Now.... to find the healthiest versions of these so that it won't affect my diet to much.
