Some Pre-op Questions

I am 16 days out from surgery - start my pre-op diet on Tuesday and surgery is 4/19.  While I am still working HARD on getting past my stress and fear of the surgery itself (I'm still afraid I might back out at the last minute) I had a few questions about pre and post-op issues.

When did most of you have to stop taking meds i.e. Aleve, Valiam, Soma are the three I am on for arthritis pain and muscle spasms?  And more importantly, are you able to resume and actually swallow pills again soon after surgery?  My meds are not available in liquid form and I'm still trying to get answers from my MD on what I will need to do.

Also, any suggestions on protein shakes?  I have tried a few and am having a really hard time getting them down NOW - I can't imagine post-op.  My support group suggested I try At***s vanilla and strawberry since the others I have tried were only available in chocolate. I'm thinking it might just be the chocolate that is getting to me.  Also got a jar of J*****n Mi****ls vanilla creme whey protein powder to try.

I'm getting desperate here and would greatly appreciate any suggestions you all might have.

Thank you!

I took my meds up until the day before surgery. The morning of I couldn't have anything but they said if you had any life or death type of meds to take those.  After surgery they crush up the pills you need to take and you take them like that.

As for Protein Shakes, that's a tough one since everyone's tastes vary! I like the Premier Protein from Costco, Max Protein (online or at select GNCs), Syntrax Nectar in Fuzzy Navel and Max Muscle's Gourmet Protein.

I was using EAS chocolate protein and it wasnt bad and I got vanilla and hate it.  I just ordered a bunch of sample packets from a couple websites people here suggested to me to see if I could find one so maybe try that before buying big containers (like I did) to find one you like.

As far as the pills go, they had me taking pills the day after my surgery.  At first I had some trouble getting them down because I was afraid to take a decent drink but now its the same as before surgery and i dont have a problem taking them, other people might be different.

Good Luck =)

Thank you for the quick responses. May I ask what websites you were referred to for samples? The only one I know of is Bariatric Advantage but they only give a sample packet of chewable vitamins, calcium, etc.

Thanks,
Michelle

my surgeon told me to take all my meds up until the day and on the day of surgery. I suffer from anxiety and the medication I take relaxes me and puts me to sleep sometimes . He said to take it on the day of surgery. Now he did tell me I had to stop asprin. motrin anything in that catagory one week before surgery.

I would not take any drugs that have blood thinners or aspirin within three days of surgery.  There have been some posts on here where people who did not do that ha some bad bleeding incidents.  Short of that my doc had me take everything else up till 24 hours before surgery.

Oh I am 16 days post op

Hi Mishie...I had to stop my main pain med (tramadol) the day of surgery...still took the thyroid in the a.m. because p.m. surgery time.  My surgery was last Monday, late afternoon, and I resumed my regular meds on Wednesday night after released home.  My doc said I could cut the pills in half with a pill splitter, and swallow them like normal.  I do that, except the thyroid, which is tiny.  The Prilosec capsule I have to pop open and mix with a little applesauce (note to self: don't crunch those bitter tiny white balls!).  ( I had previously stopped Meloxican and injectible Methotrexate a few weeks before surgery date. Can resume the injectible Methotrexate at about 4 weeks post-op)

Best wishes as you continue weighing your options.  I hope you do not change your mind at the last minute.  I waited a very long time to have my surgery, so didn't have many fears about what would happen.  You are welcome to click on my picture and read my story and blogs, if you would like.  Take care, Sweetie...Viv
