What is considered exercise???

I go to the m most nights. But to night I bough a bike and biked 10.4 miles. I talked to my surgeon when I was 3 months out and he told me walking and biking is not really exercise. I was  wondering what others think.

I loved the bike ride but do not want to waste my time doing it if that is not good exercise.
My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

what kind of doctor is that??? I thought any kind of cardio is excercise. My doctor says walking and biking are good for you and it's excercise or i've been doing something wrong (LOL)

I personally feel that if it gets my heart rate up & I can break a sweat doing it.. it's exercise.. Today it was manic housecleaning after drinking 2 diet redbulls (I DO NOT do this often, and it has been months since I had caffeine.. I kinda overdosed a little, but damn, the house is clean..)

So yes, biking & walking both qualify in my mind.. as does anything that builds strength. Heck, I lost a LOT of weight just walking 3-5 mi a day?? I'd ask the doctor why he thinks that.. I know I can max out my heart rate on a stationary bike or even a treadmill on an incline.

I agree with Val,  walking is supposed to be one of the best exercises you can do.  I think as long as you are moving you're doing a good thing.   Did you ask him what kind of exercise he wants you to do?  I have been lifting weights and i got myself a kettlebell and i love it but i also walk every day.   :o) Jeani

My doctor is so tough on me. He told me to walk 3 miles a day the day after my surgery lol. Than he tells me walking and biking are not really exercise. He wants weight lifting running elliptical machine. I have  not asked him again.

I did tell him my sister thinks I work out to much. I work out 6 times a week and his response was you can never work out to much lol. If you tell him you run 5  miles he will ask you to run 10 lol that is just how he is. But I need this kind of doctor he keeps me on my toes.
My surgeon gave me the tool. Now it is up to me to use it right.

Well, I def have to disagree with your doc. But I wonder if he wants you doing perhaps more weight training? Otherwise, he just doesn't make sense.

I have not asked my doctor that question yet, but, I would think anything is execrise.  I have lost in the last 4months on my own, 32 opounds. I have used the treadmill(walking), the bike, and the ellipitcal.  I also wolk my dogs everyday for about a mile to two miles..

So, that is dumb.. If riding a bike is NOT execrise, then there are a lot of people at my gym, that are wasting their time...LOL!

i am two weeks out from my surgery.  At my first post-op appointment last week, my doctor told me to wait another week and then begin on the treadmill or the bike.  The 30-minute Express that I do at Planet Fitness is too much for my healing body.  I agree with those above - if you attaining and holding your cardio heart rate for 30 minutes - then you are exercising.

Bernadette,
I don't think I'd be up for that 30-min express, although I am walking but not as fast before my surgery.  Before surgery I was walking 2 to 3 miles a day five days a week for approx. 45 min. Of course I use my trusty heart monitor, to make sure that I'm in my range.  Tomorrow will be a week post op for me, the time is flying by, WOW!

I think as long as you try your best that should be all that matters, you don't want to over do it ya know?

Oh yeah and does anyone have any experience with a Elliptical machine?  Ive been wanting too get one for awhile now.
