hives at surgery sites?

I have what looks like hives on all the areas of my incisions. When I went to the doctor on Friday, he took off surgistrips and didn't act concerned at all. I am about to go crazy with the itching! I have been using benadryl cream like he recommended, but it is not working. Does anyone else have other suggestions that might help?

You can try taking oral benadryl tablets-- just be wary that they could make you very drowsy afterwards (or uppity-- some people have the opposite reaction).

Sometimes taking the pills to have them work systemically is better than a topical cream as it'll help to block the hystamines (itch chemicals) from the inside.

Good luck!

I had the same reaction serval years ago with surgistrips too after a c-section.  My Doctor's said to put Derma Plast they sell it at any local drug store.  It is good for cuts, intching and burns.  It is in a spray can. I hope it you feel better soon.

I had bad itching too - my surgeon said to try a warm compress on the incision sites (which sounded crazy to me), but it totally worked. Itching gone - ahhhhh.

I took a wet wash cloth, put it in a ziplock baggie and heated it for a few (15-20?) seconds in the microwave, wrapped it in a dish towel and placed it wherever it was itching that moment. Just make sure it's warm and not burning hot.

From my notes:

Hives and contact dermatitis  from dressing/adhesive/bandages....

Take a Claritin......much better than Benadryl p.o. ...no hangover, drowsiness effect.

1. make sure ya get all residual adhesive off....use baby oil, mineral, olive oil, whatever

 2.   wash  w/  warm soap n water      dry

 3. THEN....Apply  benadryl cream, or 1% hydrocortisone

I am allergic to all adhesive in bandages and it does the same thing to me. Not only was i battling the allergy to adhesive, I also had the itching of the incisions itching but that came a few days later.
I only kept the bandages on for a day or two. I cannot remember.

Stop wearing the bandages if you havent already.  becareful not to accidentally scratch your incisions.
This will pass, hang in there.

PS: I think i itched up util two weeks out

I had terrible itching too.  See my blog post for a pic.  It was awful.  I tried Benedryl oral and hydrocortisone cream and neither helped.  Surprisingly, the thing that helped was something I had laying around from when I got my nose pierced a few years ago, its called Dargon Mist.  Instantly stopped the itching and it was healing a couple days later.
