Can someone please help me with this? Is there a lot of maintaince with the sleeve?

The sleeve is maintainence free and risk of problems goes down after it is done while the Lap-Band requires lifetime maintainence and the risk of problems goes up after it is implanted.

The sleeve and the band are night and day from the research I have done. I will let those who have had a revision from the band chime in.

They are similar in that they both give "restriction".

The sleeve is an amazing thing, my life is totally normal on a daily basis except I eat less. My friends with the band spend days and weeks after "fills" feeling nauseus, vomiting, and only able to eat soft foods like pasta.

Please do your own research, it will make the difference. Remember, this surgery is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make.

NONE. Period! Obviously, if you eat pure trash you won't have the success you would otherwise, but this is great; I get to eat regular food, just not as much as I used to.

The differences are huge. With the band, you have a thing implanted in your body - well in a sense two things: the band around your stomach, which can slip or erode, and the port near the surface, which can become infected and have other problems. You will need adjustment visits, and a significant percentage of patients eventually have to have the band removed - resulting in weight regain.

The other disadvantage about the band is that your whole stomach is left, which can result in more hunger. Consider reading the Revision Weight Loss surgical forum and see how many folks want to have their band removed and revised to another surgery.

The sleeve doesn't require a device. Here's a little more about the surgery: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/vsg/about_vertical_sleeve_gastrectomy.html

The sleeve is a more serious surgery, since there are staples to the stomach. However, once the sleeve heals there's no further maintenance and no risk due to the medical device left behind.

The "rules" are similar with the two, but my sense is that they're easier to comply with when you have a sleeve: it won't stretch as easily, there's less feelings of hunger. I can eat less than 1/4 of food right now (5 weeks out) and feel satisfied. I understand that 6 months from now I'll be able to eat 3-4 oz of meat or a little more of other foods.

THE GENERAL RULES:

600 - 800 calories a day
70 or so grams of protein (varies by surgeon & gender)
less than 40 grams of carbs (my surgeon wants less than 30)
64 oz of water (my surgeon wants 72)
Exercise most days
Vitamins every day (varies by surgeon)

Hope this helps.

Being someone who has had both the band and the sleeve I can tell you the SLEEVE IS FAR SUPERIOR!  With the band it could take months to find the 'sweet' spot, which is the amount of restriction you need to lose weight.  There also is the issue with food getting stuck.  I can tell you that is the WORST PAIN IN THE WORLD  (yes...I've given birth naturally and had a kidney stone----->while I was pregnant).  The complication rate is much higher as well.  ABC News ran a story not to long ago about the complications witth the band.  Studies show that after 5 years 30% of people with the band had to have it removed and 99% had complications!!!!!!!!!

Yes I lost 50 pounds in 3 months with the band, yes, I gained it all back.  3 surgeries later and 15 incisions in my stomach later....I have the sleeve.  You have a 30% chance of that thing coming out...is it worth it?????

I live my life like a normal human being.  I can eat what I choose.  Get full quick and am not hungry.  I don't need any meds like PPI's and have only vomited ONCE in 5 months.  Other than  not eating/drinking at the same time and eating less than others there is no difference.

People get scared because the stomach is stapled and dissected but guess what???  My grandmother is 85 years old and had most of her stomach removed due to an ulcer in the 70's and she's alive and kickin'.

Of course this is my opinion based on MY experience....But you asked :)

I had the band for 5 years and was sick the whole time. I threw up on almost a daily basis. I never found the sweet spot and after becoming anemic and so weak I could hardly function, I had the band removed in December. I was sleeved in March and have never felt better. I'm 10 weeks out and have only thrown up once and that was my fault - I really push the limits of my sleeve. Good luck on your decision.

The band is crap. The sleeve isn't. :) I speak from experience.
