PCOS and the sleeve
So I am really confused. I was SURE I wanted RNY. But the more into I read I am leaning towards the sleeve. I am concerned however b/c I have PCOS. Anyone have PCOS and get sleeved? How was your weight loss. (I know there is a PCOS forum, but it doesn't get much action) If my weight loss is slow and steady I can handle that. But, I don't want to go through a WLS is b/c of my metabolic make-up won't work. HELP.
I have all of my pre-op requirements met and I know that my insurance will cover the sleeve. I am in the insurance approval part now.
A little about me. I am not having WLS to look like a super-model. I am currently 259. So I do have a lot to lose. I want a healthy BMI. I don't really have a number in mind. I am 35 years old and have 3 small kids and a great husband (he doesn't care if I weigh 300 lbs as long as I am healthy) I want to be able to run around with my kids and play with them.

Hi! I have PCOS and was sleeved in Jan. My weight loss has been slow but steady. I'm down almost 70lbs so far. My HW was 350lbs the day I had my son. Good luck, I think the sleeve is just as effective for PCOS'ers as the RNY. If you have any questions just let me know!

Hi there!
I also have PCOS and was sleeved on March 1, 2011. I have been losing slow and steafy for my size. I have seen some who weigh a less than me and have loat more but I am really happy with my loss so far. The only time I have had problems losing weight is during the week of my monthjy cycle, which I have been getting fairly regular since my surgery. Before surgery I wouldn't see AF for 6 or more months.
Even if I don't lose anything one week a month I still average a loss of 4-5 pounds a week, which I think is awesome. In less than 3 months I have lost 53 pounds so I can't complain!
Our experience's are all different because of all the varying factors, but I don't believe that having PCOS will cause you to not lose any weight. It may be a bit slower than others but you should still lose weight. And honestly I am comfortable with being slow and steady because in my mindset, that will only benefit me in the future.
I will admit that I was a little bummed at first when I noticed people smaller than me losing more than me. But I eventually noticed that some of those same people later experienced stalls for 2 or more weeks, where mine have only lasted 1 week. Then I noticed that some have went from losing 8 or more pounds a week to 2-3 pounds a week, where I have continued to lose 4-5 a week. So I have learned that we are all completely different. We will lose differently and it is better to just not compare yourself to everyone else. Just focus on yourself. As long as you are following your plan you will see results.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

I was sleeved in july 2010. I started out at 245 lbs. I am now ( as of today) 142lbs and a size 6. I have PCOS as bad as they come. Horrible facial hair, erratic menstrual cycles, etc. From the first month I was sleeved, my periods have been like clock-work. My facial hair has really not subsided that much, but I've had fantastic weight loss, so I'll just deal with it. I am about 17lbs from my goal (at 125lbs) and am so happy with my progress. My advice, strictly stick to the low-carb diet. PCOS'ers are extra sensitive to carbs. I notice that I crave carbs when I am close to starting my period, and if I indulge, my weight loss does slow a little, but I still lose regardless. My moods are more stable now that my cycle is better (not to mention my self esteem is better since I lost, therefor helping my mood).
