Question to Ask During Final Pre-Op Visit

I want to make sure that I'm getting all questions asked during the final pre-op visit, about 2 weeks before surgery.  Please tell me if I'm missing something obvious.  Thanks!

1. Please explain the post-op diet.  Is it a week of clear liquid, then all liquids, then pureeds, then normal foods?
2. Which vitamins will I need to take post-op?  Are they available in liquid or chewable form?  Where do I buy them?
3.  What size bougie do you use?
4.  Do you do a swallow test while I am still under or the day after?
5.  Will I have a pain pump?
6.  Will I have a catheter when I wake up after surgery or will it be removed before I wake up?
7.  How long before I can exercise after surgery?
8.  How long before I can swim after surgery?
9.  How long before I can travel after surgery (air travel for work)?
10.  Will you provide an abdominal binder?  Should I buy my own?  If so, where can I purchase one?
11.  What are the post-op warning signs for complications?
12.  What does the post-op follow up visit schedule look like?
13.  How long do you anticipate it will take me to reach my goal weight?

Did I miss anything?

These are a really great list of questions.

I wouldn't worry about the bougie size. I've seen people get bent out of shape for not having the absolute smallest, even without regard to the actual volume it translates to. Depending on the suturing technique each surgeon uses, a larger bougie size could result in a smaller stomach capacity. And it's not like the surgeon will change his bougie size and leak-proof suturing procedure to give you the smaller bougie size you mentally want.

For your last question, he should indicate that all rests on you.

For the rest of your questions, they should be provided in exquisite detail.

Something my surgeon didn't bring up ahead of time but then ended up affecting me was a hiatal hernia; and he says it happens to 1 of 3 of his patients!

Awesome, thanks for the suggestion about the hernia - I'll be sure to ask that.

Make sure you have the best number to call after you get home if you have a question or a problem.

Please pardon my ignorance: what is an abdominal binder?

it's like a girdle.  It helps to support your stomach muscles after surgery so that walking and moving aren't as painful.
