Between hospital costs and provider costs my coinsurance came to a touch over $6000. The total billed amount was $72,000! Of course insurance had a lower negotiated price but golly, that's a lot. I read about how people have their procedure and recover in Mexico for a fraction of that. Now I want a vacation but there's no affording one in 2013!

We had to downgrade our insurance because it was costing over 2300 per month. If anyone tells you federal employees get sweet benefits for free is ignorant to say the least.

Worth every penny, though!

I'm a federal employee and, while I have not looked for one, I've never seen an insurance plan running that high.  Were you also purchasing Health Savings or Long Term care?

Open season right now.  I'm switching from GEHA High Option to GEHA Standard.  Primarily because I'm not expecting to need surgery or hospitalization in the next year.

Its the bcbs open access HMO. I have a child with a heart defect so not needing referrals makes my life much, much easier.

That's terrible. One driving force in me having surg now, was in case our insurance benefits went downhill or away completely, in the future. Best wishes to you!

I am fortunate to work for a University with 2 hospitals and teaching physicians as well as blue cross insurance.  My surgery bill was $30,000 and my out of pocket expenses were $0

My total out of pocket for surgery was $0.  My only out of pocket costs have been co-pays to the doctor.  Pretty sweet deal.

did you make your full deductible ?  I'm just curious because I have an $800 yearly deductible but yet my BCBS insurance is paying a lot of things other than my $15 copay.  I guess I dont understand how it works.  My out of pocket maximum for the year is $3,000  so that plus my $800 deductible, I'm expecting to have to pay $3800 for the surgery, but maybe that WONT happen for some blessed unknown reason.  from what I'm seeing on my own statements and what I'm reading here....   that would be awesome

My oop Max is $10,000 for the family, no individual max. It really stinks.
