Obesity and glorifying it on TV: Honey Boo Boo

I will start by saying I am not A FAN OF REALITY TV!!!  Case in point...American Idol.  Aren't ppl mean enough as it is?  Do we really need Simon to absolutely demoralize and dehumanize everyone up for grabs?  All for a voyeuristic mean spirited audience?  I think NOT!  So this is why I do no****ch crap like that.

In defense of those who do...I say Star Search!!  Remember that show?  They actually looked for talent.  Period.  They didn't intentionally entice ****ty talent just so they could feed on their lack of talent for the vulturistic audience who could feed on the fact that these losers were losers.  Ppl are mean enough.  We do not need a show that glorifies ******** (Simon) being mean to the talentless.

Anhoo...in that vein...what are your thoughts on the latest reality show Honey Boo Boo.  Do we really need some low rent hick family on TV?  It simply rewards and glorifies all that is ignorant, stupid, and clueless.  We all fought hard against obesity and have failed.  Until we sought a solution.  We all are in various stages against that fight.

Is it right to reward this fat lil girl? In a sense rewarding her for an unhealthy obese lifestyle by giving her a TV show?  Are we really THAT depraved of quality entertainment?  Or maybe it's simply morbid fascination.    I think it's crap.  Pure, unadulterated crap.  I think it's also a shameful commentary on what we think is entertainment.  Might as well go out and poke a stick at the local harelip, cripple, freak, whatever have you.

Your thoughts?

I agree 100%... but it's just another example of people being rewarded/glorified for bad choices in our society.  I could name several others, but I need to get to bed, so I may add to this tomorrow lol.

Furthermore, as a Georgia resident, I have to say that this show embarrasses me.  Heck, my father-in-law works for Norfolk Southern, and he can't stand that so many of their trains are seen passing by the house on each episode... says he doesn't want his company tied to that garbage lol.

I think it's sad on so many levels...  It's a testament to the crap people tune into on TV when they're probably just trying to tune out, but that's a whole 'nother thread.

And the way it represents Americans/southerners/the obese/etc. is something I can't stomach.  (Pun intended.)

I find your choice of the term "tarded" highly offensive.

Heather, it's a free country, you are permitted to be as offended as you wish.

I remember when my younger brother Jeremy was born, he has Down Syndrome you see.  Mom said to both my sister and I, you'll have to stop using that word around your brother so he isn't "offended".  I said, "Why?  He is going to hear it from everyone else at school, the playground, etc.  Why not keep saying it, so he doesn't really pay any attention to it when he does hear it?"  So that's the way we played it.  And you know what, Jeremy calls us "tarded" all the time.  And you know what?  It's pretty damn funny.  And, he doesn't feel singled out and, God forbid, offended.

Moral:  Quit being so damn PC, relax a little, and realize that our 1st amendment rights still exist.  Just because you may be "offended" doesn't mean you get to silence the masses.  Get over yourself.

I also have a sibling with Down Syndrome.

We don't consider not using offensive and outdated derogatory terms as "being PC". It's just simply being respectful of other people.

I agree Heather.  My little sister is severely handicapped with a extremely rare disorder...she's never walked, talked or spoke and is now 41.  She is a special blessing to our family....not "tarded."

So you're offended by HoneyBooBoo and not by the term 'tarded?   Hmmmm

Of course you are entitled to voice your views AND use offensive words against people who rarely have the ability to defend themselves.   However, the consequence of that is that intelligent, empathetic, worldly people will think you are the ignorant redneck you purport to dislike so much.
