Well if they can't give you a reason I sure wouldn't pay any attention to them. There are plenty of nurses here who HAVE had successful surgery!

Honestly I would have to chalk it up to ignorance.  I would bet that those nurses are all thin or at least not overweight.  They are like other people that are normally not overweight that think the best answer is diet and exercise.  I submit to you that these people are ignorant as well.

Statistically if your BMI is over 40 and weight loss you have via diet and exercise will likely be regained.  There is actually a high percentage of this exact thing happening.  This is a statistic that comes from two surgeons that I know and have spoken with.

That's odd.  One of the reasons I decided on WLS in general and VSG in particular was that I discussed it at length with one of the wonderful nurses in my PCP's practice who had successfully undergone the procedure.  She shared her highs and lows with me and also told me that (at that time) three other patients in my doctor's practice had also had VSG and were doing well.

Most people who are doing well with WLS don't go to the DR or get admitted to hospitals.  I think nurses that don't work directly with WLS only see the bad that can come with WLS.

There is a nurse in my support group -- and she has been super successful and is a big proponent of VSG.  I think a lot of nurses have seen problems from RNY since that procedure has been done a lot more.  DId the nurses you talked with say which procedures they have seen the problems with?

From my experience, the nurses and docs i work with were weary about having this surgery because of what they seen in the hospital setting. I was scared too. We had patients from all walks of life, all parts of the country.some had had their procedures done by amazing surgeons . And still something went wrong. I personally saw some of them take their last breath.
So, after I made my decision to have the VSG, I understood their concern for me. I knew that it wasn't just ignorance, but the fact that they had seen what could happen.
Now with my experience I give them the opportunity to see the other side of the coin. And they are able to appreciate the idea that these surgeries can help us live a better life.
All I knew was that if I had the surgery I could die, but if I didn't have the VSG I could die as well.
