Anyone take Biotin preop? Just wondering anyone's thoughts on this and if and when you started and how much?

Thanks!

Hi Kathy, Biotin gave me headaches (seriously), so I will just be bald (temporarily I hope).  Most people don't have any trouble with it, but if you start experiencing frequent headaches, you'll know the culprit.

Kathy - I was seriously freaked out by the whole hair loss thing.  Frankly, I don't have much to lose.  So I started 4000 mcg of Biotin about 1-2 weeks pre-op.  I've seen other sites recommend 5000 mcg per day.

Has it helped?  That remains to be seen since I'm only about 4 weeks out.  I will say that it's making my nails and eyebrows grow like crazy.

Biotin won't stop your hair falling out. No types or amounts of supplements or protein etc will stop it happening. Your hair folicle dies around the time of surgery, but takes around 3 months to start falling out as this is how long the new hair coming through underneath takes to push the dead strand out out. Read up on telogen effluvium as this is what is happening to your hair.

Biotin will help with your regrowth though.

My hair started falling out at 3&1/2 months post op and stopped at about 7 months. I lost around 50% of my volume. BUT.....no one other than me noticed. I just stopped washing my hair every day and used dry shampoo and wash twice a week.

I'm now 9 months and have lots of inch long regrowth all over my head (it's my new muppet hair!).

Hi Kathy, I began taking Biotin the second month into my six month pre-op requirements. I still do so and thus far have not experienced any hair loss. I had surgery on 21/3/2013. Good luck and all the best.
