Anyone have VSG with a high BMI

I am reading that it seems that VSG may not be the right choice for me...I weigh 341 with a BMI of 56.  I'm scared of the other procedures and am only considering WLS if I can have the sleeve.  Anyone here have this done with stats like or close to mine?

Thanks!

Ultimately you have to decide what surgery is right for you. I haven't had my surgery yet and my BMI is 51 ish  Look in the body index over 50 forum, a lot of them had the sleeve and were successful. Sleeve girl, kitty Karen ,  and Nikki 2003 are all successful and really inspiring, most of them post on both forums and most have stories on their  pages.  So yes if you want the sleeve it can work, but you should really talk to your dr about all the surgeries and get his reasoning, he knows your medical history and can give more information, but the final decision is yours!  I will be getting the sleeve too!

I started out at 357 pounds and a BMI of 54.3 when I began my journey last July.  As of this morning I am at 196 pounds and a BMI of 29.8, which now classifies me as being overweight rather than obese.  I put in the work I need to do, I make the sacrifices (rather puny sacrifices when compared with the benefits), and I am succeeding.

As seen above and elsewhere on this website, many others have started out higher than I did and have earned tremendous results because they have done the necessary self-care after surgery.

FWIW I am 55yo now (54 when I was sleeved), and I am 5'8" tall.

Keep researching!  Best wishes for you in your own journey.

I had a BMI of 60 when I started the WLS process.  I liked the idea of having the sleeve because it is less complicated than the RNY.  I didn't like the idea of mal-absorption and I feared dumping, so the sleeve seemed like a better fit for me.  I am so happy I did it.

Any WLS is only a tool.  They only work if we follow our plans.  I have lost 117 pounds so far, and I feel in control of my eating for the first time in my adult life.  i am no longer driven by a need to eat.  In fact, I have to eat by the clock because I don't get hungry like I did pre-surgery.

I wish you the best in your weight loss journey.

I started this process at 444 lbs which was a BMI of 63. I believe it was around a 50 when I had surgery... now it's a 39.7. It's definitely doable if you work the tool.

If the sleeve is the only surgery you are considering, then you've got nothing to lose, right? Other surgeries are effective as well, but if you have your heart set on the sleeve, then just know that it's perfectly doable to start with a BMI of 56.

If you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them!

I had the VSG with a high BMI. My highest BMI is 94, weight at 565 pounds, my pre-op BMI and weight two weeks before VSG surgery is 79.3, weight at 476.4 pounds. My BMI now is 26.5 and my weight now is at 159.0 pounds. My doctor told me that the VSG surgery would be right for me because of my high BMI and one other reason.

Talk to your doctor to see if the VSG would be right for you. VSG surgery is right for me and the VSG surgery did wonders for me.

Highest Weight: 565 pounds (around 1999), Highest BMI: 94

I am curious as to what you were reading that prompted you to think the sleeve was not right for you.  As you can see there are a lot of people who had high bmi's and losing and doing great.  I was only 285 lbs with a bmi of 46 but had several comorbidties.  I am now 110 lbs lighter and a bmi of 28 and the high blood pressure, high chloesterol, breathing and heart problems are all gone.  As soon as I get to the goal I want they will do another sleep apnea test and I should come off the cpap.  I am no longer in danger of going on type II diabetes medication.

No matter what you decide on surgery, the surgeries are only a tool and you need to be ready to change your lifestyle for the rest of your life in order to be successful long term.  I get your feeling of being scared of the other procedures.  I originally thought I wanted the lap band because it was the least invasive until I found out about all of the complications.  I never wanted my insides rerouted so this surgery is what fit best for me.

Do not let anyone talk you into a surgery that you are not comfortable with.  Do be open and listen to what others have to say about the surgeries but make an informed decision and not one where you are pressured.

This surgery can change your life for the better if you work the program.  Good Luck!

I am 5'3 and was 307lbs at surgery date so my bmi was 54.3 and I was fine having surgery! It was my choice over what surgery to get and I chose VSG. My highest weight was 326 and my BMI was 57.7 but at that time I was doing weigh****chers which is why I was lower when I finally had surgery. I love my sleeve and have 0 regrets =)
