regularity question
I was always pretty regular (at least 1 BM/day) before and right after surgery...... until I started pureed food. Then I became very irregular and it was so uncomfortable to me. I was advised to take Miralax once/day until I was able to get in vegetables and such foods that will keep me regular. No I'm back to my regular BMs (feels so much better).
I think it probably depends on each individual person. I have not had issues with BMs at all, thankfully! I am lucky in that I have one just about every single day. I don't take miralax or anything like that. I do make sure I drink plenty of water to help move things along.
Personally, I wouldn't take anything unless your lack of bowl movements are causing you pain or discomfort, or it's been a really long time (like over a week).
No matter how little I ate or eat, I always go once a day, and am miserable if I miss a day which only happens when I take an airplane trip. Which happens a lot...but I always manage to get back into a daily BM right away. I have not needed any laxatives but did use a glycerine suppository a couple of times.
I found that our diets don't have enough fiber to maintain consistency. When you consume so much protein and the body uses it coupled with low carbs, the fiber just isn't there. I did a lot of research and found that we should have at least 25 gms of fiber a day but I couldn't wrap my ahead around the low carb since fiber is a carb, until I learned about net carbs. To hit my numbers of protein and fiber, I found I had to eat a Quest protein bar every day. That is what I eat for lunch sitting at my desk.
Now I'm regular as clockwork. I track my fiber on MFP as well as protein, calories, and carbs and try to balance all of them. It was hard to get the fiber until I started eating one bar a day. It also made it easier to hit my protein numbers.
Might not be for all, but it saved me in my opinion.
800 calories and less than 20 net carbs is the shizzle
