Nervous about Psych Eval next week...
I think you have to be pretty messed up in so many ways to flunk the psych eval. Try not to be too nervous..they aren't judging you or your life. I didn't have one for the sleeve..I did though for the band..it was this many page questionnaire. Spoke with the psychologist and that was that. With the sleeve I met with the psychologist and she asked questions about my home life and what kind of support I'd have. Good luck with it..I'm sure you'll do fine.
My psych eval was a piece of cake. the psychologist just wanted to know a little about me. my family, friends, support systems, work. She asked what the biggest stress in my life was now. I think they mainly include the psych eval so they can make sure you have a support system, and get you some help before the surgery if you need it.
I don't think you need to worry about it too much.
You'll do fine.

Surgery May 1, 2013. Starting Weight 385, Surgery Weight 333, Current Weight 160. At GOAL!
Weight loss Pre-op 1-20 2-17 3-15 Post-op 1-20 2-18 3-15 4-14 5-16 6-11 7-12 8-8

Basically they just want to know if you have any past psychiatric problems - like if you have a history of depression they want to be sure you know that you could become depressed after the surgery, and know that you can identify and handle that. They want to be sure you are ready for your new lifestyle. They also want to know if you know what your stressors that trigger you to eat are, and they want to be sure you have a support system you feel comfortable with.
It's really no big deal. You'll do fine.
Good luck to you! I have not had the eval, so I cannot give you any input. The eval is the one thing I have left, and I cannot find anyone to take my insurance!
I had to take the MMPI for both surgeries. The first time the test was over 300 questions on the computer. For the sleeve they had a shorter version, if they couldn't get a good read on that one than you had to take the long one too. I spent a few minutes with the Shrink after he got the results from the test. The whole thing took about 3/4 hours the first time and just a couple the second.
Yes, I have found out in support that some people have to have additional therapy after going thru the Eval and being approved for the surgery. With the revision even though I was once again declared OK (little do they know ) I had to have 6 additional visits with a therapist as standard requirements for revision.
They Psych Eval's are as different from center to center as the Pre-op diet is.
They are mostly looking to make sure you don't have any serious out of control issues that could explode after weightloss surgery. These issues include severe depression and anxiety, as well as an overall feeling of loneliness, or of believing that weightloss surgery will single handedly make you happier. You want to give answers that reflect what the surgery will do for you, and why that will make you happier.
For example, they may ask you to fill in the blank. "I am most excited for weight loss surgery because..."
If you say things like "Because I wont be able to eat as much, and I won't be hungry, and I will be skinny" they may question your motives. But if you say "Because after I lose weight I'll be able to play with my children, I'll be able to eat normal portions, and I will breathe easier when exercising"--this is more of what they are looking for. A positive outlook on your surgery and the outcome, rather than being focused on the number on the scale and simply "being skinnier".
Nobody really ever fails, unless you are diagnosed right then and there with severe depression you should be fine. Another example I would say is, they may ask "True or False, I feel very alone at times and feel like I have no friends..."
If you give an honest answer such as "Well, yes I think everyone feels alone at times, but I know there are people that truly care about me and I know that the loneliness will go away once my schedule frees up and I have more time to spend with people." You can give an explanation for your answers, you don't want to just say TRUE. and move on, because that could be ranked high for depression.
I hope this helps!
(FYI: I have a psych degree and am trained in giving psych evaluations for this kind of thing. I also have had two weight loss surgeries, and had to pass two psych evals, three years apart.)
