I didn't have a liquid diet before my surgery either.  Each surgeon has different requirements.

My pre-op diet wasn't all liquid. The point of the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver, but from what I have read, it's efficacy is debated in the medical community, so some doctors think it's pointless.

I did not have any liquid diet pre-op.  It was two with instructions to keep carbs below 60 grams a day and with some other limits that keep calories in the 1,000 range.  With those limits that obviously cut out all chips and junk food along with fast and restaurant food.  But otherwise I had 4 ounces of turkey meat the night before surgery.
