Menstruation issues post op

I've read a lot of comments from people who have had horrible periods post op. If you're on birth control pills, or some other hormonal birth control, were your periods horrible post op? Or did they go back to however they were pre op?

I'm curious about this since I take Seasonique so I only bleed every three months. I'll go off it for the month surrounding my surgery so I know that first period will kick me in the butt, but I assume that things will go back to awesome once I'm back on the pill?

Hi! I was worried about that as well. I got my period the day of my surgery, and it was normal. Then for the next month, I was thinking it would be out of whack, but it wasn't! In fact, it seemed a bit shorter and lighter. I had lost about 30lbs at that point. I have had tubal ligation, so no BC for me. I'll be expecting the next one mid-Feb, so we'll see what it brings.

If we all liked the same things, what fun would life be?

Yay for tubals!  I have one too. Sadly I still need BCP so my uterus doesn't try to kill me every month :(

I'm on depo, so I don't have periods, and I haven't had any unexpected ones since surgery either, which is great.  I've seen some people with the Mirena IUD said they don't normally have periods, but got suprise visits, so I was prepared just in case.  Also, since depo is progesterone based, it doesn't increase the risk of blood clots like the pill, so you don't have to stop taking it before surgery.  Losing weight dramatically increases fertility, so make sure you have a good BC plan in place for when you go off the pill.

All bets are off after surgery! As you can see front eh responses that you've already gotten, some people don't have much of a change and some do. For me, my "normal" period is completely unpredictable due to my wacky hormone levels. I'll sometimes go 6 months without one, the be on it for so long that I have to take progesterone to make it stop. Immediately post op, I had it twice in the first month, again monthly for 2 months, then back to my weird schedule of "who bows when it'll happen again." Just take it as it comes and be prepared for anything. Like an earlier response, I'll remind you that you'll be super fertile, so be sure to take precautions. It isn't advised for WLS patients to get pregnant for the first year pre op. Also, get ready for the wacky hormone swings!! Hormones are stored in fat cells and when we lose weight quickly (like immediately post op) those hormones are released and HELLO CRAZY!!

Were you on birth control pills after surgery?  Since that's really what I'm wondering about :/

(I have a tubal, so no fear of pregnancy here.)

I was for a while, but it didn't affect anything (just like my surgeon predicted). Things were still all over the place. I think we just flood our bodies with so many hormones in the very beginning that the pills just can't keep up.

I'm only a couple weeks out but I just had my first cycle since surgery and it was lighter and less painful then it usually is.  It came exactly on time too.

I got my period a week after surgery and it stayed for three weeks.  It was not spotting it was a full blown yucky period for three weeks!  My next period was horrible I constantly was leaking everywhere.  I would change and not even an hour later I would leak everywhere.  I am hoping that this calms down by the next on.
