Newly sleeved and some questions
Hello everyone- I was sleeved on Monday- yay!! I was so nervous and thought about canceling but stuck it out and made it through. I came home last night. I was wondering how long most of you felt like you needed pain medication for? I wasn't anticipating needing them at home because I didn't take any with my previous c/s and my doctor said this should be a much easier recovery but I'm home and still in quite a bit of pain. I'm getting up and down alone, climbing the stairs and walking but it seems much more manageable when I take the pain meds. Another question I had was, my doctor said protein shakes don't count towards your liquid goal, but I'm wondering if I mixed them with water if that would make them count? I will call later and ask but just wondering what the general idea on this is. Thank you- reading all the posts on here in the months leading up to my surgery was such a help for me- hoping to be a little more active know that I made it through.
I'm not a vet, I was just sleeved on Tuesday and came home last night. They gave me liquid Vicodin for home, but my pain is moderate to mild and I was thinking about switching to adult liquid Tylenol. I hate feeling so sleepy from the Vicodin.
Congrats on your new sleeve!!

I never took pain medication other than Tylenol with codiene the night of surgery and then nothing after that. I was uncomfortable at times but never in pain. If you need the pain medication then take it.
Under my doctor's information, anything I drank other than caffiene counted towards my water intake. If it had protein in it, it also counted towards my protein goal. You are given goals to meet and it might actually take a few weeks before you can hit those goals but do your best to do them from the start.
Congrats!
I had my surgery on a Monday, came home on Wednesday and was off the pain medicine by Friday so I could drive my kids to school. After that, I just used liquid Tylenol. My protein shakes were allowed to count towards my liquids. I think that is what most of us are allowed to do. It will be next to impossible (at least it would have been impossible for me) to get even close to the 64 ounces of fluids in early out without being able to count the shakes. Also, Jello and popsicles count towards liquid goals. Congratulations on your surgery! :)

Congrats on your sleeve! I am 8 days post op and came home with and used Tylenol 3 (w/ codeine) for first 4 days at home, usually at night but a couple times during the day. If you need it, use it to stay ahead of it. But you will find pain diminishing. I started weaning myself third day at home, just spacing more time between doses.
As for fluids, I just asked this question yesterday and was told yes, protein shakes count as liquids. I don't use premade ones, tho. I mix my powders with water. Focus on your fluid count the most in the first few days and do your best with protein. Yesterday, day 7, I was able to hit both targets. Before that, no go.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks everyone!! Yeah I'm surprised she said protein drinks don't count towards liquid goals- my goal right now is 48 ounces of water and 70 grams of protein. She also said to focus on protein if I can reach both goals which seems counterintuitive? I figure worry about liquids and do as much protein as possible.
3-months out and when you get here you will forget about your first few weeks! I was at a birthday party 5-days after surgery, sore but not in pain. The first few weeks are tough getting the minimum water & protein, sipping water from the minute you open your eyes until you go to sleep! I think 40z an hour was the rule, but no matter where I was I had a bottle of water with me, kept it by the bedside also and sipped during the night. People are so generous with their advise here, I was on it everyday in the early phases, just keep in mind everything you do at this point is medically necessary to make sure you don't have leaks or problems, listen to your doc! Sip & Walk, it's what I did for 4-weeks and I feel fabulous!
Hello! I was sleeved on 5/1/14. I was given percocet for pain and took it once or twice a day until 5/5. Last night was the first night that I could roll over in bed without a lot of effort and pain so I was excited about that. Now I just have some discomfort which I use tylenol for if I really need it. The real challenge is getting in the fluids. Protein shakes definitely count for my fluids. If they didn't, I would never make it to 64oz of fluids. The first couple days were really hard as far as drinking. I sometimes felt like I had swallowed a brick and had to wait for it to go down. 5 days post op I felt great, but by the 6th day, I was starting to feel weak and fatigued with day after day on so few calories. I set an interval alarm on my phone to go off every 5 min to remind me to take a sip. I did this for the first time yesterday and it totally helped. I definitely drank more and feel much better today.
I took them the day I came home because it seemed like I should follow directions. The next day I stopped because they didn't really seem to make any difference. I felt pretty good on the whole and the only issue was the stomach ache that went with bending to sit up or lay down.
As as side note, other than that brief time with the painkillers, I never really took any of the meds they gave me, or even any of the recommended over the counter stuff the doctor suggested. I just recently turned them all in at one of the expired medicine take-backs the local ED was doing.
