Stage 3 diet help

I'm so confused!! I met with my nutritionist today (surgery 5/5). I have been unable to meet my protein requirements because every protein shake I have tried makes me gag. I've been averaging around 35 grams of protein per day. Anyways, the nut told me to take a break from protein shakes and gave me a list of foods. She wants me to eat 6 times per day scheduled since I'm not hungry at all. So a few questions- when I asked her what portion size I should be measuring out, she said just eat until I feel full. Everything I have read on here says don't trust feeling full because nerves are still  healing. Thoughts on that?

second- the list seems a little off. Things like string cheese, bean soup, eggs, yogurt, fish and peanut butter with banana are on there which make sense. But then there were things like toast, crackers, potatoes and those things just don't make sense. They don't seem

soft and they don't seem nutritionally sound. Also I asked about sour cream

with retried beans and she said beans are ok but not sour cream. I'm just confused- right now I'm not hungry and not craving anything- I would think this would be the time to stay away from bread and crackers? Veterans, I'd be interested to read your thoughts on this. Thanks

i don't know what your stage 3 is every surgeon is different

I love smoked salmon omelets 2 eggs and 2 oz of smoked salmon is 27 protein , if you eat half of it twice a day it would give you a head start I would not waste space with bread products , and would ask your nut why he/ she wants you to eat them maybe to settle your stomach

Sounds like the list my nut gave me but, I don't do the bread (toast only), crackers and such.  I do add sour cream but, I don't do love fat.  They do make lowfat though.  Greek yogurt and cottage cheese was on mine too.

If you really want sour cream with beans try putting plain chobani Greek yogurt instead of sour cream on it. It tastes exactly the same with way less calories, no fat, and protein. I feed it to my husband instead of sour cream and he can't even tell(and he is very picky!)

your list sounds right just take it slow and easy. I would measure my food though but i am not a doctor. If you feel more.comfortable measuring then go for it. It can't hurt, I am 2 months post op and I measure everything. I eat about 2oz but you could vary. Just listen to your body and eat slowly.

Based on things that I have been reading, you want a bite or two of soft foods with your dense proteins to help the stomach break the food down and move through your system.  I have read that people can't drink for an hour or so after eating a meal due to still being full, some find depending what they eat, they can't drink for 2 hours, which now makes id difficult to get your full amount of fluids in for the day.  You will have to find a balance that works for you and your system.  Thats why it's so important to write everything down and measure!!   I agree with the Greek Yogurt.  My wife changed that on me about a year ago and never told me.  I didn't realize it till I found it in the fridge one day and asked what it was.

Toast is different from bread. For some reason, crispy things like toast and saltines are acceptable to many of our smaller stomachs--I would try saltines first.

As far as how much to eat, set yourself out an ounce each of two things like cheese and a soft boiled egg or peanut butter and banana. Eat bites of that slowly over the course of 20 mins, then stop. If that seems to be ok, then the next meal try 1oz of three things, or 3oz of one thing, whatever. You probably should be somewhere close to 4oz/meal eventually, but don't pu****

I would assume she advised you against the sour cream because of the high calorie content.

Also, stay away from anything with sugar. Period. I was recently told by my Nutritionist that a study had just come out that said that VSG severed the connection to sugar craving in the brain, but that the connection was re-established with early exposure to sugar. I would give anything to have my sugar cravings permanently removed, so I think it's worth keeping in mind even if the study proves later not to be all that accurate.

Good luck!

You can eat some sour cream with the beans but you  just want to make sure you get the protein in.  Try the liquid protein.  Walmart sells it in the pharmacy section.  One tube is 42g of protein.  Now, it's very syrupy and I can't drink it like that at all so I water it down which my doctor said was fine.  Cheese is a great source of protein and so is cottage cheese.

I also do refried beans, eggs, tuna and shredded chicken (the stuff in the can).  I can do nuts and crackers and you want to try things like that, you can't spend the rest of your life on soft food.  Just go easy and really chew it well.

Peanut butter is also great protein but read labels, you don't want to do too much.

my role is that I am not allowed to drink before during and just after eating.  The liquid can flush the food through.

Early on when I first started eating dense protein I needed a little something to help "float" the food down so it wasn't so dry. I sometimes used a small amt of mashed potato, soft beans, grits or soft roasted squash.  I never eat bread of any kind, rice or pasta. EVER. If I eat potato it's 1-2 bites and that's all. I think I've had crackers once, when I was suffering a bout of stomach upset.  At 5 months post-op I still have some trouble with beef, chicken breast and boiled eggs. I have given up on steak--I don't know if I'll ever be able to eat that again.  I do okay with ground beef and pork, though.
