Feel like I'm failing

I'm 3 weeks post op today and feel like I'm not doing what I need to. I have yet to meet my fluid goal of 48 ounces per day and I have not met my protein goal either. I met with the nutritionist last week to go over things and she told me to stop drinking the protein shakes (they were making me gag/throw up) and told me to focus on eating. I'm not hungry at all, so she told me to follow a schedule and eat at 6 scheduled times per day. I'm doing that but I can only eat such a small amount, that I'm really not able to get much in. I'm averaging only 20-25 grams of protein. Today I had 1/4 dannon light and fit yogurt/greek, 1/2 cheese stick, 1 scallop, refried beans with tiny amount of greek yogurt and salsa, 1/2 cheese stick and 1/4 yogurt again. Even with eating such small amounts, I feel so full afterwards- like gross full- and it lasts for 1-2 hours. This limits how much I can drink and drives down my fluid intake. I see my nutritionist again next week, but I just feel like I'm failing. Any ideas?

Find a protein drink that you can tolerate, you may have to try many to find one that works for you.

Food wise sounds fine, but the fluids are a bit more important than the food are at this point.

This first part is really hard and it does get easier.

Check with your surgeon/nutritionist as the responses you will get here are "chat room" based.

I know what you mean, it is hard sometimes to get in all the fluid, especially when you have to wait so llong after eating to take a drink! I am 3 months out and I am still getting it figured out! It is a learning process. No advice really, but hang in there! As for protein, which brands were you trying? I loved RTD shakes when I was pre op but now I cant stand them. I love the nectars- chocolate truffle, double stuffed cookie, and cappuccino. My latest obsession is healthwise cappuccino coffee flavored protein. Yum! It says to mix them with water but I like to mix them with skim milk in the blender. Hang in there girl, you've got this!

Thanks- I've tried so many- bariatric advantage, EAS, pure protein, jay robb, total lean from GNC, syntrax nectar, unjury, isopure- so much money wasted. I will find one I seem to tolerate, order it and then within a few days, it doesn't sit well again. I've tried mixing with milk, water, almond milk, adding sf pudding, fruit, etc. Plus they make me feel so full that it was taking me 3 hours to finish one shake which sets me behind in everything else. I did talk with my nutritionist and she told me not to worry- to eat 6 times per day, protein rich foods until I feel full and eventually the portions will increase. But with so little protein, calories and water- I'm feeling tired and weak even though I'm taking all my vitamins. I know it will get better- just tough to not be meeting goals.

None of the protein shakes, even those I like pre-surgery, tasted right after.  I just considered them my meds I HAD to take to heal and get better.  One trick I learned from support group is put the protein shake in a glass with a lid, think sippy cup, so you don't smell them and that makes them easier to get down. Another for me was to switch from skim milk to almond milk so they were thinner.  They also counted as fluid for us.

My plan includes skim milk OR protein shakes at "snack" times.

I can not stand the protein drinks right now - instant nausea from them.  I do best and get the most liquid in with warm skim milk with a little bit of SF hot cocoa powder or a little bit of chocolate protein powder in it.  I drink up to 30oz of milk a day.

For me, cold stuff causes a stomach spasm which causes instant nausea, so warm liquids work best for me.

Try drinking milk - it may go down easier than a protein shake and milk has protein in it while also helping with your hydration too.  If you have FairLife milk in your area, try it - double protein and half the carbs.

I gave all my protein shakes to my sister. Everything tasted gross. Not getting enough fluid's in was making me nauseous, all day, everyday. I was taking Zofran constantly.

This is what I do most days... (Everyone has bad days lol) I have 2 oversized. cups of decaf coffee in the mornings. I put 1/2 scoop of isopure medically unflavored in it, along with my tiny pre-measured tub of creamer. 2 cups =26 grams of protein, and 28 ounces of fluid. Then I mix 1/2 scoop of grape Nectar with 2 crystal light grape, blended with 32 oz of water. It's not great, but I can get it down. That's another 13 grams of protein. Then I try to mix 1/2 scoop of the unflavored into either breakfast or lunch, sometimes both. Then protein forward food...

I used water bottles with straws (I know, bad) or to go coffee cups so I can't smell any of it.

I have a hard time eating anything. After 1 1/2 - 2 ounces total per meal, I am done! I started looking for recipes using protein powders. This week I made a banana "bread" using one of those magic brownie pans that make 30 tiny pieces. Each piece has 5 grams of protein and I top it with melted peanut butter.
