Coming Off Drugs...Wicked Appetite: Help!

I am being weaned off of narcotics I took for back problems. Aside from the horrible detox side effects, I am constantly having the urge to eat. I feel hungry all the time! I am terrified of gaining weight, especially since I'm having a little stall right now.

Does anybody out there have any advice or suggestions to quell my appetite until I'm off the meds? I have heard of people gaining weight after giving up drugs, smoking, what have you and I don't want that to be me.

Thanks!

Definitely sounds like you are going through withdrawal. Story of my life - my back is a wreck, was on narcotics for a year, had back surgery, an d was able to get off eventually but the urge to eat was there....for me, it was part physiological and partly psychological. My anxiety sky rocketed getting off the drugs, and eating was the default soothing mechanism.

If you remind yourself it's temporary, and search for an alternative (I drinnk a ton of fluids instead of eating), you can beat the urges. It's a hard thing to do, but trust me, you dont want to gain weight (like I did and with a bad back, it's the worst idea ever).

No advice, but you're not alone. I am in process if weaning down, too (very gradually, mind you). I haven't had rampant hunger,  but I find I do get it when I miss my ppi. Are you taking any prilosec or anything? The acid mimics hunger in a sleeved tummy... I hope you feel better soon. Chronic pain is a *****

While it's not the best for your teeth, it may help your cravings to chew ice just to be doing "something".

Don't have any advise about hunger but if you feel like you are about to crawl out of your skin from withdrawal try using a brushing technique.  Take a bath brush and dry scrub you skin.  Face arms, legs, everywhere you can reach. It causes sensory overload. It has helped me.  Hope this helps.

That is something I had never heard LeapSecond.  2 years ago I removed myself from Percocet after being on it for 3 years.  I weaned for a few days then just stopped.  The worst was the coldness I felt 24/7 and then the shakes.  But it went away in about a week.  Since then, I have downgraded to Tramadol, which does not compare to the relief I got from Percocet.  But, one day I had nothing for pain besides left over Percocet so I took that.  In 1 day, I was re-addicted!  No exaggeration.

I went back to the Tramadol the next day and know now, I can never go back to Percocet unless I want to go thru the withdrawal again.  No thanks!

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. Withdrawal is definitely a ***** but eventually I will slay the beast and be done with it. In the meantime, I will just have to try some of these techniques.

Thanks again. This is a great bunch!

I just hope you are all doing this under medical supervision because it can cause serious damage if done just willy nilly without medical advice or under the supervision of an addiction specialist. You can indeed kill yourself if not done properly.

My doctor is supervising me. I am on a Clonodine patch, coming off of Percocet. I am going very slowly.
