My Scale has gone Mental!

I've been on my pre-op diet for 24 days now, and I've been weighing myself every day to track my progress.  My surgeon had a weight target he would like me to reach before surgery (which is Monday...eek!), and I've been a little bit obsessive about it.

I've recorded a loss, even just a little bitty one, almost every day since I started this pre-op diet at 356.2 lbs.I drink 3-4 protein shakes a day, I eat 2-4 oz of lean protein, and I drink a TON of water.  I get 70-100 grams of protein in every day, and I average 700-900 calories.  I have only gone over 1000 calories on one day, and I painted my office that day and was feeling WAY light-headed, so I ate a little more.  Sunday, my weight was 331.2 (finally under a BMI of 52, my surgeon's goal for pre-op).

This week, my scale has been a little...off.  It has stayed steady or even gone up almost every day since Monday.  Yesterday, it said 332.0 lbs. This morning, I stepped on and it said 321.2 lbs.  I know enough about my body and how it works that a near 10 lb loss in a day is probably not accurate.  So I stepped off the scale, and I stepped right back on as soon as it reset.  334 lbs.  That didn't seem right either, so I tried again.  328.6 lbs.  And again, 342.2 lbs.  I haven't been able to get a reading that's the same two times in a row all morning.

Has anyone else had this happen?  What am I doing wrong?  Should I put the scale on a different surface?  Is this a sign that I should just stop weighing for now?

This is a really dumb question, but have you put new batteries in it lately? Mine was acting whacky and I replaced the batteries and it is working fine now.

Had not even occurred to me, but I just looked and they still have the batteries they did when I got the thing.  Changing batteries now.

Yep, what Dawn said. A couple-pound variability is normal but when the batteries get low it will go all over the place. Also, make sure that the scale is on a hard, flat surface and there isn't anything underneath one of the little feet. That can really throw it off, too.  All else fails, you may just need a new scale.

If you're going to weigh yourself daily, please consider using something like TrendWeight so that you can focus on the trends, which are what matters, instead of day to day fluctuations, which don't matter.

However.. your issue seems like your scale might need new batteries!
