Drain with Sleeve

Does everyone get a drain with the sleeve surgery or is it based on doctor preference?  What is the purpose of the drain? Surgery is tomorrow at 7:30 AM. My surgeon did not mention a drain, but sometimes I see talk about them on this site. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I had a drain, I think it's to get rid of some of the fluids & clots/tissue excess that's built up during surgery. Mine was removed when I was discharged. Good luck with your surgery.

Surgery today, I have drain. Part of heading process in production of  fluids filled with infection fighting cells. The drain allows an outlet for that, my doctor also tested drainage for amylase which would only be present in fluid if you had a leak. Its uncomfortable and a pain , but bearable

Didn't have one.  Not sure the purpose as it was never mentioned.

I had surgery on the Monday the 8th and Wed. the day I was discharged, the nurse took the drain out.  Didn't feel a thing.  Honestly, you won't.  Each day they empied it twice.  By Wed. the tiny bit of liquid was almost clear.  Don't fret over it.  You'll be fine.  The very best of luck to you!  Kim

had one in the hospital , some surgeons have you swallow a dye and check the drain for leaks mine didn't but did the standard swallow test with an x ray

feels a little funny coming out , my hubby had one once that was in for around 1 week and it hurt a little coming out was told because the wound was healing around it but in 2 days that will not happen

I was told that everyone gets a drain for this procedure.  I believe it is to monitor the amount of bleeding in your abdomen after surgery, to make sure it is not excessive.  I understand that most people have it out before discharge but in some cases you do have to go home with it.  I had mine out right before discharge about 24hrs postop. It is a little irritating and it does hurt pulling it out but it only lasts a couple of seconds and it feels better than when it is in. I hope this has helped ease your anxiety a little.  I hope it all goes well for you.  Feel free to message me. I am 3 weeks postop tomorrow. Good luck.
