My doctor cut my PPI dosage

I'm really freaked out. I've had pretty bad reflux since a couple months post op, and Protonix at 40mg was a lifesaver. Even so, I do still get breakthrough acid: raging hunger that is clearly acid related, coughing fits just as I'm drifting off to sleep, bad post nasal drip and congestion. It is MUCH better than it was when I was on omeprazole, though, so I was really happy to have found it.

At my six month follow up, my doctor said "I see you're really attached to your protonix." And I said, "No, I'm attached to not having symptoms. I guess I didn't entirely understand the conversation because today when I called to ask where my prescription was (it hadn't gotten filled by CVS), he told me that he was stepping it down to 20mg.

I'm so pissed! I feel like they're not taking me seriously. I really don't want to have reflux symptoms and want to do anything possible to avoid them, because reflux is NO JOKE.

You're right - it is no joke and I sympathize completely.  I've been able to step down to 20mg of Protonix but it took me a year of being on the higher dose to do it.  Call them back in a week and let them know it's not working and how you're suffering.

Is it your PCP or your sugeon that is cutting you back?  If it were me, I would call the other doctor and get them to give me the full script.

It's my surgeon who cut it back. I will give the lower dosage a shot but I'm going to call them right away if I have worsening symptoms.

I'm between PCPs right now (my previous one retired and I haven't established myself with a new one) or I would try that.

This might be a good time to find a new PCP.  I'm sorry your surgeon is being sort of a jerk about this.

Keep on top of this! Reflux is no joke and if not treated can be deleterious. If your symptoms get worse - especially progressively over time - throw a tantrum! Esophageal erosion is no laughing matter.
