Hi Guys!

So my big day finally came and surgery went well! I was able to get down about 4 ounces of a Boost shake and some soup at the hospital. Even made it through 16 oz of ice chips but now I'm home and can't seem to get much down.  Is this normal for day 2? I don't wanna freak out prematurely. It's like I try to drink and it causes me to burp like it's coming back up. Does that make sense? Anyone else experienced this? I don't feel sick, no dumping, otherwise fine.

Thanks for any help

Tanya

you need to drink 1 oz of water every 15 minutes or you will get dehydrated , don't worry about the shakes for the first few days the water is the most important

if you can't do this you need to call your surgeon , mine will not let you out of the hospital till you where drinking 65 oz water a day and peeing a certain amount (don't remember how much)

if you don't drink enough you will end up in the ER with an IV

I spent 2 nights in the hospital that is normal for my surgeon and many others

Try to sip your drinks. Small sips. I noticed that I have to remind myself not to take  gulps  or it creates some air and burping.

Sometimes it is the temperature of the liquid. I couldn't get down very cold drinks and really had a hard time with any protein shakes. I was sleeved but still have dumping so to drink a whole protein shake 3 years out doesn't work for me even now. Be sure to get some liquid in as the previous poster said. Check in with your surgeon soon if this persists.

Tanya, I know exactly what you're talking about. When I came home I could hardly drink. I thought I had made a terrible mistake. But it got better. Take small sips throughout the day and don't worry about protein drinks. I wasn't able to drink a protein shake until 4 days later and it took me all day to drink 1! I promise it does get better each day. Did you doctor send you home with any anti-nausea meds? Water is more important right now. Hope this video helps; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7v_FAEU76s

Ok this makes me feel better. I will just stick to my water then or ice chips and try to work my way up. Thanks for the advice!

Warm green tea helped me in the beginning.  I had a lot of problems too.  The most important thing is for you to stay hydrated at this point.

Definitely try warm liquids - those might help!  And SF popsicles can also be great.
