Dr office scales....

I've been in quite a few WLS DR offices trying to choose the right one for me.  All of their scales are usually high.  I had my 2nd pre-surgery nutrition diet yesterday and My Dr was happy that I lost 5 lbs but I told them that I weight myself in the morning and I should be down 9-10 lbs.  I know the time of day makes a difference in weighing but really.  Oh yeah I had clothes on too so that could account for the extra weight.

Maybe next time I will strip down and weigh in my undies.

I always weigh 5 lbs higher at the Dr.  Clothes, liquids, etc.  It is all relative and as long as progress is being made.  I do try to wear my lightest clothes.  Stripping down to boxers is not an option as they usually weigh me in the hall.

When we get weighed, they always subtract 2 lbs for clothing.  We do take our watches, glasses, wallets and shoes off though.

The WLS program I go to takes a little weight off of what is on the scale to compensate for clothing.  I think it's 1 or 1 1/2 lbs in warm weather and 2 lbs. in cold.  I'd ask them if they look at that factor

It shouldn't matter as long as you use the same scale every time (and hopefully it is calibrated correctly).  I never weight the same as I do at home in the morning...clothes, water/food intake, different scales can all change the number you see.

I can bank on the fact that I will weigh 4-5 lbs. more at the doc's office.  I weigh every morning first thing with no clothes.  By the time I get to my appointment I've eaten, I'm fully hydrated AND I'm wearing clothes.  Easily accounts for the 4-5 lbs. difference.

Don't sweat it - the important thing is the downward trend, regardless of the scale you use.

This is why I think it's best to treat every scale as a completely different thing.  Each scale is accurate to itself, but the only real way to weigh is wearing the same thing at the same time every day.  Any measurement aside from the one I take in the morning at home is just an irrelevant number for me.

Scales shouldn't be a variable in this process.

Why have a $20k surgery and commit yourself to lifelong weight control and weigh yourself on a $19 bathroom scale?

One of my doctors scale is certified by the state and is within 1lbs. of my other doctors scale and my scale is dead nuts to the certified scale. (Health o meter 349)

A scale should be looked at as an instrument of measure. A tool that has a level of exactness.

Some people use scales with all kinds of bells and whistles...... Cool and fine just as long as it weighs correctly and consistently. Weighs the same or within a tenth after you get off and on it again, weighs you less after you pee and weighs you even less after you dump.

Weighing yourself at the doctors office should not be a surprise.

Get a good scale, it will be your friend and partner in this process and beyond !!!

I bought a digital scale to use at home.  I always weigh myself in the morning without clothes but sometimes before going to the dr office I will weigh myself with clothes and shoes. This will give you an idea of the difference between your scale and the doctor's.  The difference for me is usually about 4lbs.  You need to consider if you are wearing a heavy sweater or how long before your appointment you ate.  I always schedule my appointments for late morning.  Long enough after breakfast but before lunch.  I just make a mental note of what my doctor's office weight and my home weigh or you write it down.  Consistency is the key to really knowing exactly how much you have lost.  Good luck.
