3 Week Post-Op Checkup Today -

Long rant... Confused.

I went for my 3 week post-op checkup today. I saw the nutritionist first, who essentially told me that I was eating too much when I told her I was having healthy homemade liquidy purees (soups or other purees) (always under 100 calories, no sugar added at my measured 4oz -1/2 cup-) with either ground chicken or tofu pureed into them (which is allowed on my plan). She told me I needed to stay at no more than 2 oz per meal, 3 x's a day.

So then I saw the surgeon who was thrilled that i've lost 52 lbs since my initial consultation in May 2016, i've lost 20 lbs since surgery 3 weeks ago, and he also told me that as long as I wasn't having any issues eating/digesting foods from their Stage 2 puree plan that as long as I kept well hydrated and got the protein goal in, he would be fine if I told him I could only get down a whole tablespoon of greek yogurt per day at this point.

These two just confused the hell out of me. My lunch came out to 35 calories because it was only 2 ounces. I'm not hungry, of course, but i don't want to be calorie deficient either and start getting sick or have health issues creep up. She also said I could progress to the Stage 3 soft solid foods on 11/2 and could then up my meals to a max of 3 oz per meal.

I've been very diligent in logging and measuring my food, eating slowly and stopping when I felt full at any point and I thought I was doing so well. I'm so confused now.

I am also baffled by the conflicting information that I have had to clear up.  Even in the packet they hand out there is conflicting info.

I have all the 'right' info at the end...

...unless they change their mind.

Congrats on your awesome success!

Thanks! Im glad i'm not the only one. The only thing I could think of is that she meant 4 oz with the clear liquid broths ONLY and when i switched to the thinned creamed soup or purees that should be 2 oz only, but that's not what she said and not what the 50 page packet says. Lol. I'll dial it back to half meals, but im still confused lol. How can I even puree meat protein in 1.5 ounces of soup? It's not possible. Lol. The magic bullet won't mix it.

I would say make a bigger batch to have left overs....

It sucks when they are not clear with patients! Good luck on figuring this out!

As long as you have excess fat to burn, it is fine to be calorie deficient.  When your BMI gets under 18.5 it can become a problem.  Enjoy this phase where 2 ounces is plenty. It does not last.

The ounce restriction is more to not stress tummy out while it's healing.

We are medically monitored.  You won't have issues from calorie deficiency or malnutrition because we also take loads of vitamins.  People with anorexia do because they do not have high body fat or extra reserves like we do.

I follow a ketogenic diet post-op. I also have a diagnosis of binge eating disorder. Feel free to ask me about either!

It is not that we have so little time but that we lose so much...the life we receive is not short but we make it so; we are not ill provided but use what we have wastefully. -- Seneca, On the Shortness of Life

My daughter and I have both had the sleeve done since 9/6/16. We both have the same doctor, PA, and nationalist. Not only have they each told us different things, they have even told her different than they told me. I find it confusing, but I have gotten to the point I am just going to follow my written plan they gave me as much as possible until I hit the 10 week period. Then I am going to follow the advice of eat as much protein as possible but keep your calories low

Good luck and congrats on the awesome job!!
