Total caloric intake

I totally understand the concept of weight loss but I was concerned that with such low calories the possibility of regain is greater. I have always consumed fairly low caloric intake (under 1500 cal per day) but was unsuccessful with weight loss due to years and years of yo-yo dieting. I don't want this low caloric intake to backfire a year from now...

It won't backfire. Al the successful folks here kept calories really low.

Metabolic surgery is different than being obese and on a diet. The rules change.

I've seen many people explain their reasons for eating more calories. In the end, it doesnt end well.

6'3" tall, male.

Highest weight was 475. RNY on 08/21/12. Current weight: 198.

M1 -24; M2 -21; M3 -19; M4 -21; M5 -13; M6 -21; M7 -10; M8 -16; M9 -10; M10 -8; M11 -6; M12 -5.

I had the same concern. Very much in the same metabolic condition as you and for the same reasons. Despite low calorie, low carb, exercise, I still seem to be a slow loser. I have to admit, the doc and nut never gave me a great answer. But we know what we were trying wasn?t working. The spectre of regain is probably just a difficult reality that those of us with effed metabolisms are going to have to deal with. We will probably always have to be on the lookout for it and will always have to be ready to fight it.

I was a slow loser from the get-go, but I really stuck to my plan and lost all my excess weight (over 200 lbs) - so don't let a pokey rate of loss discourage you (as long as you're following all the rules)! In the long run, your commitment to your plan has a much greater effect on your ultimate success. Also, yes, fighting it is a lifetime battle. I know I will always need to weigh, measure, and track my food and weigh myself every day if I want to stay at a normal weight. It's a pain, BUT - I don't want to go back to where I was, no way no how...

J9, You have a surgical tool to help with any regain. Apply the rules NOW and get the weight off while your body is still adjusting .. In time 18-24 months it will definitely be harder. so get where you are going!. Maintainence is easy as long as you apply your same surgeons rules. I am post a wls surgry 23 years ago. am within 15 lbs of orig goal. after a 45# regain.( stress, care giving, grief all affect our metabolism.

Don't forget as you loose weight you will also be able to be more active and that willl help in your maintainence.

At 3 weeks out, I was eating 300-400 calories.

A friend had VSG one year ago. I advised her to eat low calorie. A dietitian advised her to stay at 1200 a day. She was not able to get that in from food, so drank Ensure to keep her calories up.

She lost some weight, but has already gained most of it back. She no longer counts calories and drinks a lot of wine with her meals.

IT IS PERFECTLY NORMAL TO GET IN THE AMOUNT OF CALORIES. AS TIME GOES ON, THAT WILL CHANGE.

UNLESS YOUR WT. LOSS PROGRAM TELLS YOU DIFFERENTLY, YOUR MAJOR CONCERNS SHOULD BE THE AMOUNT OF WATER YOU DRINK AND THE AMOUNT OF PROTEIN YOU GET.

IN MY PROGRAM, WE WERE TOLD NOT TO COUNT CALORIES. ULTIMATELY, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO EAT 4 TO 6 OZ. OF LEAN PROTEIN ALONG WITH 1/4 TO 1/3 CUP OF FRUITE OR VEGGIES.

DON'T FORGET THAT YOU ONLY HAVE 20-30% OF YOUR STOMACH LEFT.

Yes, it is perfectly normal.

Right now, the most important things to get in each day is the amount of protein you were told to have, water and your vitamins.
