Anyone get results with Nioxin?

So, I mention to my mom the other week that I'm noticing my hair's falling out - nothing major, just more of an annoyance at having the loose hair sticking to my shirt, desk, etc. She takes my niece to the local salon today and comes back with a box of Nioxin treatment - the stuff isn't cheap. I'm grateful that she thought of me, but before I open the bottles, I'm wondering if this stuff is really going to help or if I should just have her return it.  $40 for a glorified shampoo isn't something either of us can really afford to throw away.... Anyone **really** see results with it??

Hey there... I didn't use the Biotin shampoo and for $40, I probably wouldn't!  LOL  Anyway, I did buy the biotin capsules at Walmart.  I have been taking one a day since my surgery (or shortly after).  I can't say that they decreased my hair loss, buy as the hair is growing back in, it's healthier and stronger.  I don't really know of anything to help with the hair loss.  Everyone is different.  For me, it started at about 4 or 5 months and lasted about 3 or 4 months.  I don't have much now, but I do have a LOT of new hair growth.  Biotin is suppose to be good for nails and hair, so it can't hurt.   Good luck on this either way you decide to go! Sorry... I misread your subject!  I was thinking biotin and you said nioxin... duh... must have been a blonde moment!  Anyway, I didn't use that so I don't have any experience with it.   Margie

Yah - my conundrum is that I'm not hearing that either taking biotin supplements or any kind of shampoo is really going to bring "great" results...the Nioxin isn't a biotin shampoo as far as I understand. But I have to say - the Nioxin smells really good :)  And I have a sensitive scalp as it is - the UV protection probably can't hurt. Thanks for the input anyways, Margie!

Yes, the stuff is NOT cheap..Lol! I used it for about a year after surgery, and I think it helped. I am a "hair" person, so I HAD to try something!  I wish you the BEST!

Nothing will prevent the hair from falling out...you will lose what you are going to lose.  the products, nioxin, biotin, etc will help with the re-growth of the hair.  be careful though, some products like Rogaine make you have to use the product forever.  If you stop then the effects go away too.  I'm not sure about Nioxin but this may be in the same boat.  It definitely won't hurt to use it but it won't stop the hair loss.   BTW...I lost hair from 3 months until 9 months post op then it just stopped.  I used to have to get my hair thinned because it was so thick.  Once it all stopped coming out it felt like I had gotten it thinned at the salon.  I equate the amount loss just like the post partum hair loss.  right after I had my son, same thing.  Hair is lost and grown in cycles.  When it comes to the end of a cycle you may notice more loss.  Our hair loss post op is a result of the trauma from surgery, anesthesia, and reduction of protein and other nutrients.  I was losing about 300 strands a day.  Normal hair loss for everyone is 100 a day.  HTH!!

I started taking Biotin about 2-3 months before surgery and then resumed taking it at 2 weeks post-op.  I also spent the money for the Nioxin Shampoo and Conditioner, which I tried on day 3 post-op.  However, I couldn't tolerate the odor and I haven't touched it since.  I haven't started losing hair yet but I am still a little early for that.  Hopefully the Biotin is doing the trick because I don't have a whole lot of hair that I can afford to lose.

I use Nioxin and alternate with a product called Nutri-Ox that I got at a beauty supply store.  The Nutri-Ox is at least half the price, with the same apparent results.  I like the way my hair feels now, and even if the product doesn't keep the hair from falling out (not much can stop the process I've heard), it has made a difference to the texture and helped with styling.   I buy the Nioxin on sale whenever I can, and will probably only use it for the first year postop. With Nioxin, you only need a tiny bit (around a teaspoon) when you wash your hair. The Nutri-Ox only takes a bit as well, and has a gel treatment that you put on before you blow dry to help with styling...it helps protect the fine hairs from damage by overstyling. MaryG

YES, YES,YES!!!!!!!!!  My hair was falling out too. I bought the shampoo and from the time I started using it, my hair quit falling out.  I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who's hair is thinning from the surgery.  Before I started using this shampoo, my hair was coming out like crazy. I can't say enough good about this stuff.  I still use this and the conditioner.  My hair is almost back to normal. It's naturally thick and I was devastated when it thinned down so much.  My hairdresser told me a couple of weeks ago when I went in for a haircut that my hair was really getting thicker.  I'm so glad. I don't know how much longer I'll have to use it but I will definitely use it at least until my hair is completely back to the thickness it was.  The smell is strong but it SO worth it!  :) hth, Tweety

My hair too has been falling out like crazy.  It was fine for a few weeks and now I am losing alot again.  I have been taking Biotin for a few months and it has helped nail growth and such alot at first but no longer seems to be doing much.  My hair stylest has highly recremended (SP) the Nixon shampoo and conditioner- it is very pricey but rumored to work well.  Many people on this site sware by it, so I may check it out.
