A friend (who is also an OH member) has a friend whom she did not know had had WLS several years ago who has recently developed pancreatitis.  She asked me if I'd ever heard of pancreatitis being a side effect of or being caused by the after effects of gastric bypass surgery....  I have never heard that, but I wondered if any of you had....  I don't know if he was diabetic before his bypass surgery...  Thanks for any help/info/comments! Pancreatitis can be caused by alot of things!  Even Acohol? maybe you should look it up here on the internet and see what it says. I read it and it said nothing about bypass surgery. The only thing that I saw that even came closed to it was if you had bowel problems or Gallbatter problems. If you had those problems then maybe they could be a small part from the surgery. But I really don't think this was caused from this surgery. That's just my opinion on the info you have given.  Good Luck with your research!!

I actually have a friend who had GBS several years ago and developed pancreatitis as a complication and just had another surgery due to those complications, although I don't know specifically what was done.

I'm a surigcal ICU RN with ten years experience. How the RYN can "cause" pancreatitis is via the gallbladder. Basically we all probably know that rapid weight loss can cause gallstones. Well if those gallstones block the bile duct, then all the fluids coming from the pancreas get "backed up" and can't drain which then leads to these digestive enzymes causing inflammation and auto digestion of the pancreas or "pancreatitiis". There you have it.

I happen to be going to surgery today for gallbladder removal and I have stones blocking my bile duct that also caused pancreatitis. I've been in the hospital since Monday. They had to put me on antiobitics for the inf lamamtion before the operate. I had rny in November and am not looking foward to going back into the operating room so quickly.

Does the friend still have a gall bladder? Pancreatitis can be caused by a bad gall bladder, a stone or a stricture in one of the biliary ducts.

Hi, well I am one of the few I guess that developed pancrititis after surgery.  I devewloped it 5 weeks out, and I was not diabetic before surgery, I had also had my gallbladder removed two years prior to surgery...  It was very painful and I spent 4 days in hospital on antibiotics.  I am not sure why this developed but from that point on I have been very healthy.  I am 07/13/04 surgical date.  I was 338 and currently 180.  I still have another 25 I would like to take off but have no meds and do more than I did my whole adult life.  Take care & best wishes, Beth
