Headaches from Crystal Light?

I have been drinking lots of Crystal Light, partyly to get used to the taste and partly to fill me up on my pre-op diet.  I have been getting the worst headaches lately and am wondering if it is from the Crystal Light, or the aspartame in it.  I'm going to go without it cold turkey for a few days and see what happens.  I remember being told that aspartame can cause bad headaches.  Have any of you had problems with this, or is it an old wives' tale? Are you replacing coffee/tea/soda with the Crystal Light? If so, it could be caffeine withdrawl. Or even sugar withdrawl!

I kept a headache log for my neurologist and discovered that nutrisweet was the cause of my headaches. I know have to stay away from all drinks, gum, etc. that contain aspartame and it is very hard because I am a diabetic. I would still rather go without then get the terrible headaches I was having - even migraine meds were not working! I feel so much better now that I don't ingest anything with aspartame! Good Luck! Aspartame has been known to cause all kinds of meladies...from headaches to joint swelling, eyesight, and more. If you are not use to it slow down and see what happens. I also know if you are a big soda/pop drinker and then all of a sudden stop that can cause headaches along with caffeine withdraws. I personaly suggest slowly cutting down on one an adding the other.

Ok, just have to deviate(sp) from the subject for a minute....yay, Linda..you and I have the same date!!  I just got my date last week, I'm having my surgery open so no pre-diet but I do drink crystal light.  I don't know that I get headaches from it but I do get really bad heart burn, there's something else to look for.  I've noticed it with the lemonade so now I bought some tea.  I love drinking it so it will really bite if it is the crystal light.

Yeah Danni!  We'll be on the same path.  I am so excited, I almost feel like it's going to be Christmas in July.  These headaches are horrible.  I did take migraine medicine for the one I got yesterday and I'm gonna see what happens without the Crystal Light for a few days.  I do drink one cup of coffee a day, and my nutritionist says I may continue that after surgery as long as it is only ONE cup per day.  This is way worse than any no caffeine headache I've ever had.  I really am beginning to like the Crystal Light, so this is a drag.  I'll have to find something with Splenda in it I guess. I didn't get headaches with Crystal Light but it was making me dump... weird, I know.  It wasn't real bad... more like mini-dumping.  But anyway... I asked about it here and a fellow RNY-er suggested I try the Wal-Mart brand of Crystal Light, apparently it is sweetened with Splenda.  I haven't tried it, but it is worth a try!  Also, I have heard there are more interesting flavors with the Wal-Mart brand.  :-) Best wishes!

Pre-op I also got the most horrible headaches from crystal light.  I stopped using it and went to the wal-mart brand and also wylers and did not have any trouble with headaches again.  Now that I am post-op, I have trouble drinking anything bu****er or decaf tea.  Just does not taste good anymore.  So try something else, and good luck Gayle

Linda I am so sorry you are experiencing head aches. I know it is from the aspertame. I had a good friend die from that stuff. She was an advid coke drinker, 2-3 a day. She developed cancer, don't know all the details but when the doc found out she was drinking that stuff, he said no more. She went into remission. They had given her a set amount of time to live, she actually lived 2 years longer. Everyone was amazed and her head aches stopped too after she stopped drinking that stuff. There are alot of other ways to flavour water, just please dont drink stuff with aspertame, headaches show that it already does not agree with you. Take care, Catherine
