Does Dramamine work post-op?

I am over 2 years post-op RNY and I am going to be flying for the 1st time since surgery. I usually always took dramamine before flying. I know there are certain medicines we should not take post-op and others that work differently. Does anyone have any experience with taking Dramamine after surgery? And is there any reason we shouldn't take it? I don't think it has any of the medicine we can't take in it. Thanks!

I just went on my first cruise in Sept. and I took Dramamine for the first time. It didn't help me with the sea sickness, but it didn't give me any bad side effects either. I don't know if we are suppose to take it or not, but it didn't hurt me any.

Sure it works, and it's fine post-op RNY.

Dramamine is the brand name for the generic anti-motion-sickness drug "dimenhydrinate".  It's a salt of the sedative antihistamine diphenhydramine (Benadryl), specifically the 8-chloro-theophyllinate salt , but functionally there's no difference between Benadryl and Dramamine other than absolute dose.  25mg of Benadryl aka diphenhydramine is equivalent to 50mg of Dramamine/dimenhydrinate.  Buying the drug store generic form of Benadryl is a whole lot cheaper than buying Dramamine, if cost is an issue for you.

I'd like to suggest that you try Transderm Scop patches.  I am sure they have other names.  They are small round patch that you put behind your ear.  They are like a little round band-aide. They stay on for about 72 hours  (even swimming and showering) and they work MUCH better than any pill I have tried. 

I have suffered from motion sickness since I was a child.  I have used these forever.  I don't know what I would do without them.  They do require a prescription from your doc.  But they are worth it. 

Also, at my bariatric center they put one on all the patients now before surgery b/c so many patients were complaining about dizziness after surgery.  So, I know you can wear them post-op.  They are GREAT!

You are far enough out that for short term use it should not hurt you.  Just be sure to take only the recommended amount for a dose. My surgeon advise me this way when my back was giving me issues and I needed to take Advil. I took it as directed for 5 days and I was fine. 

If you are only take one dose each way I'm sure it would be fine. If you are doubtful call your doctor to double check.

I suffer from terrible motion sickness, I have taken every medication known to man since I love to travel. A friend recommended a recommended a product called "Sea Bands" They are elastic bracelets with  a small plastic ball that is placed on the inside of the wrist. I thought she was crazy, till I was on a cruise slumped over the toilet... you get the picture. I remembered I had the "bands" with me and put them on, I swear to you in 10 minutes I was 100% fine. I have used them ever since. There is no side effects at all. The dramamine and the patch made me feel like I had taken heavy sleep medication. Worth a try for 10.00 bucks. You should be able to purchase at a CVS or Rite Aid. Good luck and happy travels.
