Hello All,

I am only a week post- op and I know it will be a while before sushi will on the diet, but I was wondering how well it is tolerated and what types and how much can be eaten?  I like all types cooked and raw and I was talking to a friend today that mentioned su****o me and it made me wonder... Any input would be appreciated...

hmmmm I would like to know the answer to this as well. I have heard a lot of people say that rice is generally not well tolerated after surgery.

Hey guys,

I am about 11 weeks post op and ate sushi after I got my doctor's permission. I suggest that you get sashimi, which is kinda a rice less su****he rice sits incredibly heavy and makes your pouch feel like it's going to tear!   I have been able to handle tuna and california rolls pretty well. Congrats on your surgery and enjoy!!!!

Yeap, both my DH and I are RNY patients and we still enjoy sushi and sashimi. We try to limit the rice by just eating one or two pieces and then have the rest in sashimi.

I love sushi but I usually pic around most of the rice because it doesn't sit so well in my pouch. I couldn't really eat it until about 6-9 months out. Be sure to check with your surgeon about rice. Some surgeons don't want their patients to have rice or pasta ever.

Yeah the rice is definitely kind of a killer, makes me super full super fast. I prefer su****o sashimi so I just peel as much rice as possible off the outside of the rolls. I look like a total weirdo doing it... but I get my sushi fix without feeling like my belly is going to explode.

go for sashimi- all the great protein and omega 3's without the sticky rice that could cause problems going down and adds carbs.  Miso soup and edamame are great post op too!

minus the rice because rice expands in the stomach and alot of people with WLS get sick. I would wait awhile before trying su****here is a pasta made by Dreamfields that is okay. I have had it and am fine with it.  Of course small portions. With a spagetti sauce called Simply. Like the sushi wait awhile.  Good luck on your new journey and welcome to the loser's bench.

All the sushi restaurants I have dined at have a small selection of rolls made with soy paper, no rice, and they are delicious. Ask the waitress if they can make any of the rolls without rice. Usually they will accomodate the customer. At this point in time, I can eat about 3 slices with the rice with no problems but I can eat a little more when made without rice. MMmmm enjoy!

I eat it frequently with no ill-effects or problems...rice and all. But, most days I seem to have a pouch made of steel, so YMMV.
