Aspartame Side Effects

There are over 92 different health side effects associated with aspartame consumption. It seems surreal, but true. How can one chemical create such chaos?

Aspartame dissolves into solution and can therefore travel throughout the body and deposit within any tissue. The body digests aspartame unlike saccharin, which does not break down within humans.

The multitude of aspartame side effects are indicative to your genetic individuality and physical weaknesses. It is important to put two and two together, nonetheless, and identify which side effects aspartame is creating within you.

Aspartame Side Effects

The components of aspartame can lead to a number of health problems, as you have read. Side effects can occur gradually, can be immediate, or can be acute reactions.

According to Lendon Smith, M.D. there is an enormous population suffering from side effects associated with aspartame, yet have no idea why drugs, supplements and herbs don’t relieve their symptoms. Then, there are users who don’t ‘appear’ to suffer immediate reactions at all. Even these individuals are susceptible to the long-term damage caused by excitatory amino acids, phenylalanine, methanol, and DKP.

Adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

Eye
blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
pain in one or both eyes
decreased tears
trouble with contact lenses
bulging eyes

Ear
tinnitus - ringing or buzzing sound
severe intolerance of noise
marked hearing impairment

Neurologic
epileptic seizures
headaches, migraines and (some severe)
dizziness, unsteadiness, both
confusion, memory loss, both
severe drowsiness and sleepiness
paresthesia or numbness of the limbs
severe slurring of speech
severe hyperactivity and restless legs
atypical facial pain
severe tremors

Psychological/Psychiatric
severe depression
irritability
aggression
anxiety
personality changes
insomnia
phobias

Chest
palpitations, tachycardia
shortness of breath
recent high blood pressure

Gastrointestinal
nausea
diarrhea, sometimes with blood in stools
abdominal pain
pain when swallowing

Skin and Allergies
itching without a rash
lip and mouth reactions
hives
aggravated respiratory allergies such as asthma

Endocrine and Metabolic
loss of control of diabetes
menstrual changes
marked thinning or loss of hair
marked weight loss
gradual weight gain
aggravated low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)
severe PMS

Other
frequency of voiding and burning during urination
excessive thirst, fluid retention, leg swelling, and bloating
increased susceptibility to infection

Additional Symptoms of Aspartame Toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all
death
irreversible brain damage
birth defects, including mental retardation
peptic ulcers
aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
hyperactivity in children
severe depression
aggressive behavior
suicidal tendencies

Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses:
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Epstein-Barr
Post-Polio Syndrome
Lyme Disease
Grave’s Disease
Meniere’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
ALS
Epilepsy
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
EMS
Hypothyroidism
Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
Fibromyalgia
Lupus
non-Hodgkins
Lymphoma
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

These are not allergies or sensitivities, but diseases and disease syndromes. Aspartame poisoning is commonly misdiagnosed because aspartame symptoms mock textbook ‘disease’ symptoms, such as Grave’s Disease.

Aspartame changes the ratio of amino acids in the blood, blocking or lowering the levels of serotonin, tyrosine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and adrenaline. Therefore, it is typical that aspartame symptoms cannot be detected in lab tests and on x-rays. Textbook disorders and diseases may actually be a toxic load as a result of aspartame poisoning.

Ever gone to the doctor with real, physical symptoms, but he/she can’t find the cause? Well, it’s probably your diet, your environment, or both.

Aspartame is the common denominator for over 92 different health symptoms at the root of modern disease. The Aspartame Detoxification Program demonstrates the most effective way to reverse disease symptoms is removing the underlying cause - aspartame.

I counsel aspartame victims worldwide and have witnessed nine out of 10 clients restore their health by following the Aspartame Detoxification Program. Begin with detoxifying your body of all residual chemical toxins from aspartame's chemical make up of phenylalanine, aspartic acid and methanol and their toxic by-products, and see if any adverse health symptoms remain. Try the Aspartame Detoxification Program, and within 30 days your symptoms should disappear.

Steps:

  1. Remove all sugar-free products with aspartame from your diet.
  2. Learn to 'read' your body. Begin recording any health changes.
  3. Get a hair analysis.
  4. Be happy with yourself.
  5. Detoxify.
  6. Restore depleted nutrients.
  7. Exercise and get plenty of rest.
  8. Eat 75% raw foods at every meal.
  9. Drink water, water, water.
  10. Get control of your life.

I designed this Ten Step Program to help protect your health and the health of those you love from being seduced by the sugar-free diet craze. Wishing you good health.

What can you do about aspartame side effects?

Set an example by changing your diet.

  • Tell everyone you know.
  • Talk to the schools and day care centers. Offer to speak at parent-teachers meetings.
  • Contact your local, state, and Federal government representatives.
  • If you see someone with a diet drink, ask if they have had any of the typical aspartame side effects.
  • Spread the word at your work.
  • Distribute the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network and Pilot's Hotline
  • Tell your doctor about the scientific research available proving the negative side effects of aspartame.
  • Register a complaint with the FDA, the FAA, the NutraSweet Company about aspartame poisoning.
  • Return all food products with aspartame, opened or unopened, to your grocer. Tell him/her the products make you sick. The grocer can return them to the manufacturer for a store refund. The manufacturer should get the message. So, will the grocer.
  • Spread the word on computer networks.
  • Publish articles in newsletters at your church, place of work, or neighborhood association.
  • Set a personal example for health and wellness.

This is old, old news and I cringe every time I see it posted on the board. The study that concludes all these things was funded by the sugar companies. That should give you a clue right there to the validity of the claims. I've used Aspertame for YEARS and have never had a single problem with it. I hate these scare tactics designed to force people to boycott sugar substitutes.

i agree with this comment.  "epstein barr" and "chronic fatigue syndrome" (which are the same disease) are caused by the "epstein barr virus".

and snopes confirms that much of this is unfounded:

I used it too and had many of these problems after surgery and guess what?? They stopped when I quit consuming it! I had severe anxiety and noticed after I would eat or drink anything with aspartame in it the problems and anxiety got worse. I was taking anxiety medications like crazy and nothing would make it stop. I stopped the aspartame and within a few days I stopped the anxiety meds and no longer have to take them.

Since this particular study, many, many, many other non-biased studies and research have been done that have proven the truth of most of this study's claims.  Aspartame (brand names Equal and NutraSweet or any blue packets) is really dangerous for many people.  It's now being considered as a possible drug by many researchers.  This is why Splenda and other sweetners have been developed-- to avoid the dangerous aspects of aspartame.  The wide-spread use of aspartame came about partly due to insider big business lobbying and politics, much the same way cyclamates were ousted back in the 60s and 70s, even though cyclamates didn't actually cause cancer, as claimed.  The bad health effects of aspartame can seem non-existent, but they may be causing problems in the body at a very slow rate, like any other problem ingredient.

Splenda, (sucralose and any yellow packets) while not actually GOOD for you, is a way "lesser evil" than aspartame, with the bonus of being stable for use in cooking.  Chlorination is used in the manufacturing process, but as of 6 months ago there were no clear studies proving it's dangerous to the body.  It has been used in Europe for many years, and is still on the market there.  The jury is still out on Splenda.

A truly safe sweetener is plain ol' saccharin, or Sweet n Low (or any pink packets).  It was developed at Johns Hopkins in 1879, and was immediately used to help diabetics.  The only drawback is that it's not stable in heat, so you can't cook with it without a bitter taste.

Finally, there is Truvia (rebiana), which uses one ingredient extracted from stevia.  Not enough is known about it yet, except that when you separate one component from the other components in a natural substance, you don't get the chemical benefit of all of it, you just get the one part which may not "perform" correctly without the others.  Also, it was developed by Cargill and Coca Cola, which are not exactly known for their health concerns.  So far all the studies saying how great it is have been done by Cargill itself.

I've been studying artificial sweeteners,  MSG and other food additives for over 2 years, and I avoid aspartame like the plague.  I'm just sayin'...

I think with everything some people have problems and some people do not.  It is a personal choice.  I also heard the study, I also heard it was funded by the sugar companies...everything we put in our bodies does something according to someone.  If you have sugar you get hyper, fat or diabetic.  If you have sugar substitute it's something else...weigh your options and do what is best for you.

good luck.

1 in 20 people if they eat PEANUT BUTTER will DIE without immediate medical treatment.

It just depends on what YOU can tolerate or not.

I personally have a terrible reaction to SPLENDA or its generic SUCRALOSE.  (And they put it into everything!!)   It causes me to loose so much strength in my legs that I can barely go up stairs.

A few years ago I started having this terrible loss in muscle strength, I though maybe I was getting MS or ALS, and started by doing an Internet search on leg weakness.  I came across a site describing this as one of the possible side effects of splenda.  I had just switched to splenda in my iced tea a couple of weeks earlier.  I cut out all of the splenda, and in about a week, my legs were at full strength again and I had no trouble climbing stairs.  I have had a couple of bouts of recurrence since then, and sure enough I could trace it to consuming something with sucralose in it that I missed on the label.

Splenda molecules do start with sugar, but what you consume does have chlorine atoms glomed onto the sugar's Hydrocarbons.

Aspartame just gives me a little buzz.  I was reviewing my weight history, and I found I always gained weight the fastest when I was drinking a lot of Diet Coke with Aspartame.  There was a recent study with mice that found that giving the mice water with an artificial sweetener cause the mice to eat more than giving the mice sugar water.  The explanation was that tasting sweet (even artificial sweet) starts the body releasing insulin to process the coming sugar.  If the sugar does not come the the elevated insulin levels cause the mice to eat more to counteract the high insulin levels.  DIET soft-drinks can make you fat.  Like we needed anything else...
