How long to stop vitamins before fasting labs?
I called my surgeon's office about this because there was a question about the copper and zinc test....one must be stopped 1 week prior and the other 3 days prior. My surgeon said as far as his patient's go....we are exempt from stopping....he overrides the protocol for the labs because we cannot ever stop taking them, not even for a day.
My NUT tells me to stop taking my vitamins for 3 days prior and for the stuff that I take megadoses a few times per week, to stop for a week. I have to say it works because about 2 weeks ago my PCP did some labs for my regular yearly physical for her (She never does my labs) and I added on B12 and D. I forgot to stop them for the week and both of them came out crazy high.

Then "crazy high" is the amount that is normally in your blood. Why do you care how much is there without the supplements unless you plan on stopping the supplements?

I understand the B12 if you're doing injections, but the D was a pill, swallowed, and wouldn't show up in blood unless it was absorbed. And I agree with not taking anything the night before a blood draw - if you're taking vitamins, then you're not really fasting.
