what blood samples need to be protected from light?
Does anyone have a list of which blood samples need to be protected from the light? I gotta get labs drawn next Tuesday and I suspect they don't always do it right. I know some need to be protected but I'm not sure which ones. Last time, they put a whole bunch of tubes of blood in sleeves. The time before that, they only wrapped a couple tubes in foil. And if in doubt, is there any reason not to just protect just about all of them?

I know that Vitamin K, Vitamin A, B1 and B6 should ideally be protected from light exposure. Hopefully others can chime in on additional ones.
Vitamin D should be kept cold/on ice.
The only downside I could see about wrapping all the tubes in foil is that it can be difficult for the tech to see how much blood they're drawing (whether the tube is sufficiently full). I've also not seen any indication that it's necessary for the majority of tests.

I did not know D needed to be kept cold. I don't think they've ever done that. At least, not kept it cold anymore than they keep them all cold. Should they be doing something different to it than to other samples? I mean, they probably all go into the fridge, don't they? Or maybe not.
I think a bunch of the minerals are supposed to be protected from light, too.

Refrigerated is fine per the CDC guidelines, and your lab probably knows what they are doing in that regard. I only mentioned it because I went to one draw site that seemed to keep their tubes on the counter for quite a while, so I pressed the issue a bit with them and asked them to refrigerate (or freeze, as was their policy) ASAP.
There definitely could be others that need protection from the light. The ones I listed are just what I've happened to come across in my research. I once asked my surgeon's office and they didn't even know the A and K were supposed to be protected.
I'll be curious to see what other replies you get.
