Baseline bone scan those 2 years out, did you have one pre and post op??
When I had my surgery my surgeon suggested a baseline bone scan...Since RNY is a malabsorptive surgery. My PCP thought I didn't need one (since I'm a man)...The things I had to teach my PCP over the years. I really would only like to hear from those of you who are years out with DS or RNY. Did you have a bone scan pre op and have you had one or more post op and how does it look? Just worried how my bones will hold up over the years...And yes I take my calcium ect...
I'm cross posting this on different forum...
I didn't have a pre-op bone-scan because it wasn't required (and I only did the required pre-op testing).
I had a bone-scan last year at about 2.5 - 3 years post-op. My bones looked "great" according to the results. I don't remember what my compositve/overall # was, but I remember comparing it to other results on the internet & agreeing that it was pretty great!
But really that didn't surprise me because I am very vigilant with my supplements (not just the minimum required by most surgeons). I do the doses recommended by the ASMBS in their paper discussing vitamins/supplements (1800 - 2000 of calcium per day).
Good luck to ya!

I didn't have one pre-op. I had one in 2008 which came back with no deterioration. Osteoporosis runs on both sides of my family so I wanted to know where I stood. I had a hysterectomy in 2009 which can add additional concerns. Had another one in October 2010 and it came back fine too.
My PCP recommends every 2 years unless there are changes in the scan.
I DO believe a baseline should be done and glad I did one.

I had RNY June 2007. My Dr. does not do base line scans. I have had three bone mineral scans since my surgery. With the last scan this month I have osteoporosis. I have always taken 1500-2000 mg of calcium citrate with Vit D daily. I will be seeing the hemotoligist in two weeks to work out a treatment plan.
