I was reading about this yesterday and I was thinking to myself he had to know what he was going was killing him.  And the fact that he refused any help...it made me think that what he did to himself was sort of a for of suicide.  I think he wanted to die.  He just got to the point that he just didn't care anymore. What a horrible way to die.
