Over 50

I am in the process of preparing for WLS and am getting excited, but see that most of y'all seem to be pretty young.  Are there any people here who had the surgery after 50?  I wish I had done it sooner, but still am hoping to forestall serious medical problems.

I was 52 when I had my surgery last July.  I had no problems and lost weight at a good rate in spite of being a revision.  My surgery was open this time and I didn't have any complications.
There is a group here for people over 50.

Hello, Congratulations for taking this step.  I had the rny surgery at age 52 last summer.  I had no surgical complications and have had no issues regarding the surgery.  Everything up to this point has been positive.  I am down 89 pounds since the surgery, 107 since the pre-op diet started and 121 all together.  My high blood pressure was resolved by the surgery itself and my joint pains that I suffered from have pretty much gone away.  I have no regrets for having had the surgery and just wish I had done it sooner.  Best of luck to you.

I had my surgery done back in July 09 and I was 44 at that time.  I think there are a number of OHers in their 50s and 60s on this board.  Many of us "older" folks wish we did it earlier in our lives, however, we can't turn back time.

One quote that I always liked, "I can't change how the story begins, however, I can change the ending".  You have many, many years ahead of you ...in fact, probably MORE, since you are moving forward with your surgery. Congratulations!

RNY on 05/03/10 with
55 here! Had RNY last May and haven't regretted my decision for one second! Well, there was one day a couple of weeks out when I wondered if I'd done the right thing, but that was it!

I feel younger and am healthier than I have been in years. I can do things I never thought I'd do again--I even discovered a couple of weeks ago that I can actually run! I'm not thrilled about the excess skin I'm developing, but I'm learning to live with it.

Overall, WLS was the single best thing I ever did for myself. I only wish that I'd not been so scared and had the surgery earlier in my life.

I was 51 when I had my band placed --- peri-menopausal at the time.
Fully menopausal now (and I have the hot flashes to prove it).

Lost 135 pounds in 18 months while I was going through menopause --- quite confident that I could not have done it without my WLS.

I was 52 when I had surgery, almost 6 years ago.  I lost my Type II diabetes, my high blood pressure, my high cholesteral, my sleep apnea, oh and 149 pounds!  I would have the DS once a year if I needed to!  I feel like I am about 25 most days.

Good luck to you,
Michele

I'm 56 and had my DS less than 3 months ago (I'll be 57 in June) so don't let being over 50 scare you.

I wish I had done mine sooner too but then again, if I had done mine sooner, I may have not had my DS.
