Why be a troll?  What is to be gained? Do you have any thoughts, experiences, advice, comments, or pictures regarding trolls?

 Its simply attention seeking behavior

I think you are right to some extent. It goes beyond merely seeking attention, doesn't it?  For instance, a"newbie" sharing having reached a weight loss goal may also be seeking attention, but it is a different kind of attention than what a troll seeks, isn't it?

trolls come in a variety of flavors:

1. To give controversial opinions without risking an established reputation
2. To cause problems to those who the troll has deemed an enemy
3. To agree with one's own opinion, thus lending support to selfsame opinion.
4. To View Around a Block
5. To provide light comic relief.
6. To be the biggest jackass possible.
7. To spread disinformation

I like #5.  I think if I were to be a troll, it would definitely be for #5.  Come to think of it,doesn't this thread fall into the # 5 category? Oh no, am I a troll?  Wait a minute. Don't I have to hide my identity to be a troll?  In that case, I am not one. Phew!

All attention seeking behaviors
I rest my case

What is a troll?

The traditional definition of a troll refers to a member of a community or usenet group who makes posts deliberately designed to attract responses of outrage or indignation.  It is the troll's intent to "hook" unsuspecting members into responding, (hence the term "trolling"), thus providing him/her self with the satisfaction of knowing they have impact on others.

A distinction must be made between true trolls, newbies who are undergoing growing pains as they attempt to adjust to community standards, and regular community members who simply have strong but otherwise harmless, dissenting opinions.  Trolls should be removed, newcomers assisted, and contributing community members given at least a modicum of respectful distance.
