A friend of mine wants WLS, she is thinking about the sleeve or the DS.  She is worried about how it will effect her gout, which is very severe.

Anyone know if this will hurt or help her?

Only anecdotal.. My good friend had bouts of bad gout and was on meds.. Had her RNY about a year ago and no flares since.. I don't know much about it, but that's her experience.

She should discuss this thoroughly with her potential surgeon.  Protein supplements may be an issue. I know of a couple of RNY members in my support groups who have gout, and they have had miinor flare ups. I know that my surgeon's nurse has noted that protein intake for gout patients can be a challenging issues for some.  So this is a major topic to discuss prior to any surgery decision. DAVE
