My grandmother was the same way. Didn't change her eating habits, just adjusted her insuline to compensate. Crazy thinking

Neal, sadly my Daddy was the same way ..... Long term type 2 Diabetes , Two heart attacks  a few strokes  ... loss of a few  toes .... an  Early Death . I was raised with  the same genetic bag of genes    and  some  seriously Crazy food values. I am living post op,  one day at time  desiring  NOT to die Like My Father and Grandmother , and brake the cycle for my Son and Grand Kids  . Happily my Diabetes is Now Diet Controlled! I am Banded, maintain  and almost 5 years out.

I'm so sorry :(   I hope your FIL Embraces Change soon .

In all Honesty if we  think about the diabetics in our life, your  FIL falls in  the majority. Change happens when  folks are  ready  and not before.  For several years I my self played the  Blood Sugar  gamble ... Like a horse  drug to water  ...  People are ready for change when they are .  Since we love them and want them HEALTHY  we want them ready for change NOW!

My family is loaded with type 2 Diabetics ( and WLS Patients!)  from  a combo  things  ... A  Chit gene pool , Crappy food  choices & food  values , lack of exercise &  living in the Deep South sure didn't help!   Many  Southern delights  are fried , Cheese covered , Butter laden , Lard filled  , Bacon or Pork  based , loaded with sugar ,  Oh and ya gotta have Sweet Tea!   Diabetes and Heart Attacks waiting to happen .. with out exercise and moderation...sadly.

Oh he won't.  Love him to bits but part of his character is never to change his opinion or lifestyle on anything.

I had type two myself and was one more test away from insulin  before surgery.  My dad had it as well as my gran so genetics were definately playing their part and growing up in the west of Scotland didn't help.  I have a fondness for bread, chocolate, and potatoes that will never go away.

She needs the DS, not RNY if surgery is the option she chooses.  BTW the butter may play into the diabetes some but it's not the main reason; it's the cakes, cookies, flour, sugar, starches turning into sugar quickly that needs to be moderated.

 exactly, Dana!

you'd think people here would know this.

once upon a time I had a group to talk about Binge Eating Disorder, and later one about Clean Eating.

PM me if you are interested in either of these.

Three years she's had this and she has had no qualms about putting the same fat over sugar over sodium recipes out there while she herself was suffering the consequences?

Gee, made a fan out of me. Sigh.

Now yall, we should not cast stones.

Who among us hasn't had something deep fat fried or a sugary sinful dessert?  ANYONE?  Most of us do partake in the yumminess of life sometimes.  The key is moderation.  We don't know if she is eating the stuff she cooks in moderation or not, and it isn't our place to put her in her place.

I wouldn't wish that horrid disease on anyone, nor would I accuse someone of "asking" for it....genetics AND lifestyle play a role in it.

Let's do what we can to protect ourselves from it.  If she profits from it by creating some diabetic cookbook or a diet plan or whatever, more power to her.  She is a business woman, and she is in the business to MAKE MONEY.  Money I'd take in a heartbeat if I had something to sell!

And BTW, I am not a PD fan...she actually grates on my nerves....I find her accent a bit too "overdone" and I hate her fake smile.  I do like some of her recipes though, and anything I've tried has come out beautifully.

I agree!

I was wondering if someone was going to bring up the points you made in your post.

I wanted to add that there are plenty of Type II's that are NOT overweight. They have been doing the intestinal part of the DS for 20 years in Europe on 'skinny' Type II's and there is a clinical study underway here in the US, finally!

I was a Type II but my blood sugars have been normal since the day after my surgery.

I am not a fan either but I was hoping she was not a member here, or maybe it would have been a good thing, then she could have "mommy-buttoned" this due to "personal attacks", which I guess are OK if you are not a member.
