Plain potatoes, corn, and dry roasted peanuts...Good or bad??

Been thinking about these for awhile...So are they good or bad for you??  Would like to hear your thoughts.  I'll post this on other forums too.  Peanuts have good protein...The hospital nutritionist said to go lightly on them because of their oil content...And it's not the best oil (compared to walnuts and almonds).  Corn has some nutrients but has starch...which the body burns first, turns into sugar.  Potatoes have more nutrients that corn...A plain potato with some lemon on it can really fill you up.  But again, starch.  Any thoughts on these three items??  Brian

I think that's an individual thing.  I eat peanuts, but stay away from corn and potatoes because they both trigger me to want more.  If you are trying to lose, I would stay away from all three.

cabin111, I personally stay away from all three (except maybe a BITE of potato if I've cooked them for my family). Granted, all of them have vitamins etc., but there are other healthier ways to get those, green, leafy veggies for example.

I stay away from all "white stuff". I was also told to stay away from peas, and corn. I have totally eliminated them from my diet. I focus more on beans, and eat lots of sweet potatoes.

Love peanuts. And do it them almost every day. roasted - with no sugar added (watch for those that have sugar - and many chemicals - planters dry roasted - for example).  Peanuts are my 4p.m snack. I pre-measure them. They keep me full and happy until dinner time (6-7 p.m). That and sunflower seeds. I do try to get them organic or with as few additives as possible.
It takes me a while to eat my serving (1-1.5 oz) and I know I can't fully digest them. They really help with my BM (fat + fiber) and carbs in them do not bother me.

As for potatoes and corn - I do avoid that like a poison.  They have such a high glycemic index (higher than sugar) and even in small qty - they caused me to have RH *reactive hypoglycemia.   I may have 2-3 real potatoes fries when I am out with my BF... (he gets them when we can't get the sweet potato fries)  I even fish them out from my soups ... the RH I get from potatoes - is usually really nasty (BS below 40 or 30).

This might help you understand where those items stand, carbs per serving:

While they all have protein, corn can use two days worth of carbs and make your blood sugar go sky high.

Not sure where you got your corn info but one cup of yellow sweet corn averages about 132 calories and 29 carbs not  606  and 123 carbs,  5 gr of sugar 5 grams of protein I verified this on three different web sites and one text book.   a 2.5-3 inch baked potatoe with skin is about 195-170 calories with 36 carbs and 2 grams sugar and peanuts have about 160 calories per oz 4.6 carbs per seving eating a cup of peanuts is 8 servings. So none of the items eaten as indicated are off he radar if you account for them.

Well....I try not to think of any food as "bad"...........food is food, just some has more "nutritional bang for the buck" than others....

Nuts-I prefer almonds and pistachios and eat them

Corn-love it-on the cob, out of a can, creamed....eat it every week

Potatoes-sweet potatoes are my fave, but I do eat regular ones occasionally

Moderation, as with anything, is the key

Peanuts, shmeanuts -- they're protein, crunchy and tasty.  The salt can make you retain water, so drink more water.

Corn and potatoes are high on the glycemic index, however they are still "complex carbs", and lets not forget the nutrients in the potato skins when left on (and I always do).  I think in moderation, as many things, they are fine....especially corn mixed in mashed potatoes.  What's not to like?
