I would like someone to tell me how many calories a day I should be consuming being 11 days out.   First of all I am afraid to eat anything.   I drink a protein shake and broth and the occassional snack pack but I am scared of not getting enought and scared of getting to much!   My dietician lets say was zero help and now I am baffled!~

For the first six months I averaged about 500 calories a day.  The first few weeks were a lot less.  Usually one protein shake drunk throughout the day at 2 oz per serving.  If you had weight loss surgery, you have enough stored up fat so that you are not going to starve to death or anything.

Your appetite will gradually return, but you may never experience actual hunger again.  I never have.

First, check with your surgeon's office or NUT.  Are you allowed snack packs at 11 days out?  I was on liquids for the first 20 days, then mushies for another 10 days.

Also, you don't have in your profile what kind of surgery you had, so I'm responding as a VSG-er.

Once people finally migrate to all foods as tolerated (which will be different timeframes depending on surgeon's instructions), calories usually fall in the 600-800 per day range.  Until then, just do the best you can.  I was around 350 calories per day for about the first month or so.  Liquids are far more important than calories on a daily basis, although if you're drinking protein shakes you're getting both at the same time.  Protein is important for healing, but low calories are OK as long as you're getting liquid in, because your fat stores will carry you for several weeks, until you can get to your daily calorie level.

I'd say, just breathe and relax!  :-)  Your job right now is to get in your liquids, protein, rest, and walk.

What's a snack pack?  Doesn't sound like an approved food.  When I left the hospital, I was eating yogurt, applesauce (unsweetened), blended soup, and protein shakes.  If you're talking about 100 calorie packs of cookies, etc., you'd best toss those in the trash right now.

I can only tell you what my nutritionist just told me in pre op meeting,  It is not the calories its the food.  Minimum 60 grams protein a day,  nothing with more than 5 grams of sugar in a meal, no drinks with meals.  you should be nearing the end of two weeks of pureed but should also be having follow up dietary and surgical assesments.  The program that I am in does not use protein shakes but I can supplement real food of right consistency with milk whey.  Eggs (especially the whites) yogurts, cottage cheese are all good sources.  And 64 oz of water between meals. Maintain vitament regime.

You need to fix your profile so that your surgery type and date show up under your avatar---this info is VERY important in answering your questions accurately.

Didn't your surgeon's office give you a food schedule? No matter which form of WLS you had, I'd think you'd still be on either liquids or pureed foods---what's in those snack packs?

At this point, I doubt it's possible for you to eat too much. (*grin*) Focus on eating protein---at this point, everything you put in your mouth should have more protein than fat or carbs. Drink as much fluid as you possibly can.

I was given a schedule. 2 weeks protein liquid shakes, two weeks mush foods (yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, sf ice pops then to soft & everyday foods as tolerated ...no calorie counts but all protein 60g min. Per day. All the soft foods help give your body a chance to heal. Once on the last stage you eat protein first then if u have room add veggies. No snack packs...lol
Try isopure liquid protein drink(40g protein per bottle) from gnc or other health food stores it helps reach the 60g requirement

Calories don't matter at this point no matter which surgery you had. What is MOST important is that you are getting in enough fluids. A minimum of 64 ounces a day. Dehydration should be your biggest concern, not calories.

What are snack packs? If they involve sugar, they are NOT a good idea. Protein shakes and broth are perfectly fine so early out. When you are ready, move on to mushy foods like scrambled eggs, sf yogurt, sugar free Jello, refried beans.

Start taking your vitamins as soon as you can. You are in no danger of starving yourself. Your vitamins will cover your nutritional needs while your body uses your fat for energy.

If she's talking about the snack packs I'm thinking about, they are jello and pudding, can get sf also, I have bought the sf jello, but naturally prefer the more expensive jello brand.
