Hi all!  I was just approved and scheduled for gastric bypass March 2, 2012 and already have a trip to Hawaii planned March 22, 2012 for two weeks.  I live in Alaska and really need the warn sun.  Does anyone think that it will be ok to travel and still enjoy myself or should I ask for a surgery date after I get back?

Your opinions are most welcome!

Congrats on the approval. It is going to be a wonderful journey. I would check with your doctor. I travel about 80,000 miles a year for work. Mine told me to wait at least 6 weeks as the potential for clots is high from surgery and fying could be daangerous. I know changing your vacation may be dificult. But, if you can, that would be what I would do. If not, then I would schedule it for as soon as you get back. Don't put it off too long. :) Use this time to prepare for the surgery. Come back here often, get your proteins and vitamins. Oh, something to think about...journaling. pwrite about your goals and dreams. Write about your frustrations. Build a support network. Hugs and prayers. Vicky

Hello, i would like to say that it is better for you to get surgery after you came back from your travelling. It is obvious that when one got surgery of any type then he/she needs proper rest for atleast 3 days, more is benefiical but you are going to travel on the same day so try to get surgery date after you cae back and ahve a happy journey and best rest.

My advice is wait until you get back. Those first four weeks after surgery wore me out.

Go enjoy Hawaii and leave the recovery until you get back. I had the same dilemma at the time of my surgery. I took a trip to Jamaica. I started my pre-op diet the week I got back, and had surgery the next week. It was definitely the right decision.

I'm sorry but you might not like what I'm going to say.  Reschedule your surgery.  I had my surgery scheduled for September 15, 2009 and a trip to Walt Disney World for November 5,2009.  Well, I had the surgery on the 15th, came home on the 17th, and was readmitted in the hospital on the 21st.  Spent the next 10 months in hospitals  and a nursing home because of an infection(total body infection from pancreatitus) and a couple of stiches breaking.  Don't get me wrong,  I would do the wls all over again, even knowing what I went through. But I wouldn't have planned a trip so close to my surgery.

I'm another vote for rescheduling either your surgery or your vacation. It is major surgery, and it will take you awhile to recover.

I had the same issue, and I am grateful that my surgeon required me to change my surgery date.

I had surgery on a Tuesday and was back to work on following Monday. Never had any complications.  Your trip is not until 20 days later. If you are feeling good, I think it is fine. Check wth airlines about rescheduling for medical reasons if that becomes necessary.

Some people fly out of the country for their original weight loss surgery or later for plastics and they have to fly back when a new post op. As long as you get up and walk - keep your legs moving while sitting, and be aware of what you need to do to avoid a blood clot, then you'll be fine. Check with your doc. You can take food possibly onthe plane but check with the airline first.
Make sure you get lots of water in -flights are really dehydrating and you'll be prone to that already with the surgery. Have fun!

You aren't going to be in any kind of shape to go on a vacation and enjoy it. You'll be  getting most of your calories from liquids and some soft foods. You won't have any energy. You'll be having trouble getting in enough fluids and enough protein.
