Hi OH family,

I am writing because I am finding that I am fighting off anxiety / depression.  I don't know why now?  I am on edge all the time, I have feelings I used to have when I ate away my emotions.. I cry at the drop of a hat.. My teenagers are on my nerves, I am a single mom and financially things are tight...

I went to the doctor today and the one med he wanted to out me on was $124 / month...so I had to go back and say no..so he put me on Buspar that was only $4 / month...

I am just so scared and sad... please help...

Is this normal for WLS patients??

Helen

Low iron... 2 years - just about time for it.. Check ferritin - I need to be better than 50 to feel like me
Low iron may also caus elow T3 - the active part of thyroid.   They go hand in hand...
Then there is low B12... and other lovely minerals - vitamins. Like Vit D. Even low normal proteins will contribute.  (you want to aim for 7+) Vit D - probably 50+,
If my B12 drops below 800 - I know it.

About 2 yeasr post op a lot of us ran out of the srored vitamins and minerals..

time for a very detailed blood work... and for us - "it is normal " the doc said -it is not good enough... As I found out the hard way... "just normal" - I won't die (at least not right away) but it was no life.

iron is 80

Vit D 30.2

My cholesterol is 163

TSH was low, but T3 and T4 were good so doc said leave be

I am just so anxious, depressed, and worried that I will start eating the worng things to comfort me

Here is my opinion:

Low ferritin - you need to get more iron.
B12 is great,  don't change a thing (IMO)
Your D is low - best when it closer to 80... may make a difference.

low TSH - may be good - how low?  too much T3 will leave you jittery and increase anxiety... There are ways to reduce that with food...  how "normal" is T3 and T4 (with range)

Additionally: Very low cholesterol - below 150 (for total) also may contribute to low energy, depression...

I was told that low D could cause depression, too.  Yours isn't terrible at 30 but it could be better.
Are you able to get any exercise?  I have been working on it because it is supposed to help with depression.  It does seem to help even though I fight it all the time.

I am upping my Vit D, and I do try to excercise, however, when I am depressed it's harder to get out..

You have already gotten some very good suggestions.

1300 for B12 is not too high.  You need to keep it just where it is.  Any B12 that your body does not needed is eliminated through the urine.

I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you for your advice... My B12 has been at that level for over 1 year..so I shouldn't cut back?

Both your ferritin and Vitamin D seem low to me.  They are both within normal limits per the labs but as far as the D is concerned we need to aim at numbers much higher than the labs indicate.
