Is Bariatric Surgery the Solution to America's Obesity Problem?
Interesting article in Atlantic magazine...."What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls the butterfly." Richard Bach
"Support fosters your growth. If you are getting enough of the right support, you will experience a major transformation in yourself. You will discover a sense of empowerment and peace you have never before experienced. You will come to believe you can overcome your challenges and find some joy in this world." Katie Jay
After watching TV this last week and not being able to eat (or want to eat--still trying to get used to that), I can totally understand why we have an obesity problem in America. Get a huge greasy pizza plus cheesticks delivered to your front door for $10. Or eat this giant greasy cheeseburger for $1. Fast food and delivery has been the undoind of America. So, if we don't change those habits, then WLS may be our only hope.
America's obesity problem, in my opinion, starts in our schools. The quality of meals provided and allowed in today's schools is outrageous. I saw an article a couple months ago talking about how the department of education was pushing to have Pizza classified as a vegitable since it has tomato sauce on it! Hell why not call it dairy because it has cheese!
I know the area we live in the provide a "healthy option" typically salad but seriously what kid is going to choose salad over Pizza or Chicken fingers... Yes there are a few out there but for the most part not many. I know where I live the elementary school kids go to school earlier than the high school so my kids are up at 6 am getting ready, and let me tell you two kids with AD/HD trying to get ready for school in under an hour is insane. Sometimes they end up getting breakfast at school, which is usually in the form of a chicken biscuit, or some type of pastry.
I find it ironic how the government loves to point out the problems with obesity in this country but does very little to actually help resolve the problem.
I know some states want to add taxes to unhealthy foods and habits hey go for it, but I then feel that those of us who purchase products for a healthy lifestyle should be rewarded. Don't charge me tax on the purchase of my bike and accessories let me just say that my bike and supplies cost me a lot more than my out of pocket for WLS which was over 1K. Subsidize my gym membership, hell I am there 10-13 hours a week.
It is easy to sit back and talk about the problem but really no one wants to solve the problem beause when it comes down to it a healthier population is going to cost some company money and jobs.

i agree, the menus at my daughters school is awful!!! It is why i pack her luch 4 out of 5 days a week.
I feel in addition to that, a lot of it begins at home. I am working hard on teaching healthy eating habits to my children, and that food is for fuel, not recreation. I'm not militant about it, just matter of fact. it makes a huge difference.
