Question on Protein

Google Dr Garth Davis for some very insightful facts about protein.

He gave a speech at the Obesity Help conference last year where he said that he has never seen a patient with a protein deficiency.  Read the article on his website from Feb 13, The Protein Obsession.  I have cut out most protein and keep my weight under control with vegetables and fruit.  I keep up my lab work and have no deficiencies.

White Dove-Dr Davis was not my surgeon, but I have met him several times, and very much value his opinions...I'm still on this fence about this protein thing of his...I think it's just cuz I've been "doing what I've been doing so long"-and I'm probably just SCARED of changing...I know he's a fabulous athlete, and is VERY healthy HIMSELF, so he's obviously doing alot of things CORRECTLY..which may have included revamping his whole protein regime...

but..I'm still THINKING about it

One post-op in one of my support groups actually did have protein deficiency, from not getting the minimum.

I will agree that some people without a requirement for excess protein go to high.  I met a new post-op that was shooting for 150+ a day.  Now I I train 5-7 days a week for around 16-20 hours total a week and do have higher protein goals and she was shooting for my goals.

The key is to live a healthy lifestyle and healthy people eat fruits and veggies not only protein.

I haven't taken the time yet to read the article BUT I honestly DO believe that we need a good amount of protein actually everybody needs a minimum amount. My mom who has had no wls is protein deficient.

Can I ask why you would cut out your protein intake?

They may be "insightful" but they most certainly aren't "facts."

For one thing, he's lying if he says he's never seen a patient with a protein deficiency. Heck, I know several WLS with proten deficiencies. I AM ONE OF THEM. I had a deficiency for the first 3 years post-op, in fact.

There is no way he could see as many patients as he sees and never have seen any of them be deficient in protein. It happens.

For another thing, it's not just about avoiding a serum protein deficiency. It's also about preserving lean muscle mass while losing weight and about increasing satiety.

Dr. Davis has drunk the Vegan Kool-aide and therefore has no credibilty with me.

The only way to know for sure is to see your blood work.
How much proteins  you getting a day and what is your Blood level?
if below 7... probably you need more, if 7+... you are getting enough.

I need 120-150 gr per day so may blood stays close to 7... when I get 80-100 I get low normal level. But then again - I have RH - so I try to get as few carbs as possible so my body is most likely using some of my proteins to turn them to sugar...

Only you looking at your blood work results and how you feel (tired, low energy, hungry, high energy, etc) can now how much you need.

My blood work has always been pretty good, with little tweeks here and there.  The last one was in the fall and everything seemed fine except that they found that I was calcium deficient.  Working harder at not forgetting my vits.

If your proteins level were fine (more than 7) then what you are doing  - is working for you. Do not change a thing about proteins.   We are so different - and what works for one person - may not work for someone else.  I need a lot of proteins to keep my blood work close to 7... And I have been told by people who do not know better - "you do not need so many proteins". When i ask how do they know?  they usually have no words..   You need to do what works for you.

I just read some of your replies - and since you increased your activity level -a and decreased carbs - you may need to add proteins. (to make sure you get 100) .. and then check again to see how things are working for you.
