Hi, ladies! I had the Mirena put in about 6 weeks ago. My gyno wants me to go back for an ultrasound to make sure the Mirena is placed properly. (This must be his standard for his practice--I knew he wanted this before I had it inserted.) It's going to cost me $160 out-of-pocket for this ultrasound. Just wondering if your gyno required an ultrasound to check the position? (I'm wondering if maybe they're just trying to make some extra money by requiring this?) Please share your experience/thoughts/opinions. Thank you!

Hey there, fellow Mirena, gal, lol! I had mine placed in January and he did NOT do an ultrasound to check positioning at followup. At six weeks I had to go in for him to check placement, but he did that the old fashioned way--with a speculum and his fingers (yay for being female!).

I'd call and argue it. Seems unnecessary to me.

Ka-ching!!!!

Unless you think there is something wrong and he can detect something wrong on manual checking - it's just a money making ploy - absolutely NOT necessary!!!!

Had mine put in in November and no problems!

Thanks, ladies!

@ Sin Kim....Did you have to go in for a follow-up visit 6-8 weeks after insertion? Just wondering if I cancel the appt for the ultrasound if they'll try talking me into still coming in to have it manually checked? Do you think that's necessary?

I had the ultrasound follow up and one every year after that.  Luckily in Canada most healthcare is free including ultrasounds.

I also have the mirena.. they asked me to have the ultrasound, but I didn't do it.  I've had mine now for the past 5 months and everything is fine.  If you feel like there might be an issue, then have the ultra sound.. otherwise- you can skip it.  Are you having a lot of pain associated with the insertion?  If yes.. or it seems akward then you might as well do it.  No sense in having to come out of pocket even more money if it's not in the right place for an abortion,

I've had Mirena for about a year.  I went back a few weeks after placement for the check, but mine was just a "prop em up in the stirrups and let's have a look".  The ultrasound seems a bit overkill to me, but I would definitly have the placement checked just to be sure everything is ok.

Good luck!

Yup money hungry doc you have! I have had my Mirena since a month after my son was born 12/2010 and after the first 6 weeks they just did an exam. Fingers and speculum... that was it. Also my dr had told me if I can still feel the strings while squating then we were good to go! LOL
