How long do I have to take chewable vitamins?

So, I am 5 weeks out and am having a terrible time taking my liquid and chewable vitamins.  They litterally make me shiver and gag.  My doctors office says that I need to continue to take liquid or chewable for absortion but I have my doubts since they also sell only liquid and chewable.  I have seen people on here that say it is fine to take regular.  Any suggestions of brands, etc???

The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery says you can switch to pills you swallow as soon as you tolerate them.  As far as absorption, many, many patients take vitamins they swallow and their labs show they are absorbed just fine.

I am having the same issue with the chewable vitamins.  They make me gag and I'm nauseated for hours after.  Anyone have any suggestions for a regular vitamin?

Any adult multi with 100% of the RDA of most stuff in it is fine.  Something like Centrum, or a generic equivalent.

Actually, Vitalady (who is a distal RNY) has a list as to what a RNY person should take. I'm listing both as I don't know if you are a distal or proximal RNY:

Ok, now I really feel like an idiot!  lol  I went on Vitalady and she lists tons of different vitamins and it look slike you are taking multiple pills daily.  However, if I understand correctly, if my multi (such as Centrum) has all of those in them, then I should only have to take the Centrum.  Correct?  Sorry, there are just so many different answers and opinions.  I definately knew that I would have to be taking vitamins for the rest of my life and I just want to get it right!

Not correct.

The ASMBS says RNY folks should take two multivitamins a day, 1500-2000 mg calcium citrate a day, iron and B12.  Most people also need D3 but you should have your vitamin D level checked to see if you do.

Some of the vitamins vitalady recommends, I personally would only take if my labs showed I needed them.  Not all RNY patients need extra vitamin A, E, K, etc.  But I would get my labs checked regularly so I would know when to add them.  I am 3.5 years out and have had to add D3, zinc and vitamin A, based on my labs.

I have found that I can tolerate the taste of Centrum chewable multivitamin, you can order them online from Walmart and I like Bariatric Advantage chewable lemon calcium. If your dr office carries them, they will give you a free sample of the different flavors so you can try them.

Good luck!
