I got an email that my labs were in, I think my D is low but there were no directions to change anything so I thought I'd run them past the vitamin gu ru's on here.
This is what they sent me. Thanks Melisa

Yeah, your D is very low.  According to the Linus Pauling Institute, we need our D to be at least 80, otherwise we're at increased risk for osteoporosis, heart disease and other stuff we don't want.

You had a lot more labs than what you listed here, right?  Just wanted to make sure you're getting all the stuff tested that you need.

Thanks Kelly, Yes I had a lot of labs done, everything else looks great, I saw that D and wanted to ask thosse of you who know a lt about it. I use Opurity chewable calcium with D, I do have some Bariatric Advantage dry D 5000 IU(label says 1 a day) that I started adding as soon as I saw that.I was taking both last year and was told I didnt need the extra D since my calcium was a good one and also has D. Im going to try and get in with the nutritionist from Kaiser, but what would you recommend?

several months ago, I did a survey of a bunch of RNY patients.  I asked them what their vitamin D level was and how much D3 they'd been taking.  Nearly all that had a D level of 80 or above were taking at least 10,000 IU D3 in addition to whatever was in their calcium and multi.  Two people were only taking 5000 IU D3 and one was not taking any extra D3.  So, if my vitamin D level was as low as yours, I would start taking at least 10,00 IU a day.

What I personally take is 50,000 IU D3, three times a week.  That's what I need in order to keep my level up.  Last time I had labs, it was 104.

Vitamin D issues are quite common with post ops.  I had this same issue.  Dry D3 is what you need.  I battled D issues for a couple of years after my RNY, adjusting my dry D3 intake. I'd taken 4 of the 50K IU dry D3 per week for almost 2 years and my D labs indicated a 65. Not quite at 80 yet, so I began taking 7 per week, one daily of the same strength. I'm due for labs now, and if my D labs are above 90, I'll reduce my intake. DAVE
